1.5 vs 1.7???

i am on older Mac version 10.6.8 so i would need to ungrade my Mac first to run 1.7

My question is:
- are older projects + VSTs running fine on 1.7?
- is it worth to update?

i have around 50 older projects on 1.5 so i wouldn't be happy to lose time with upgrade to ruin old projects.

you are just putting off the inevitable. most of the major problems have been discussed.
main thing i found was 64bit i switched back 32bit had a lot less problems. 64bit is set as default. but that is what i found. others may have had a trouble free transition.
if you have any commercial projects guess it would be a good idea to finish them off first and leave some time to upgrade your mac and Ren.
i come from old hardware sampler background and have lost hundreds of tracks from hard-drive failures to power.cuts to just being plain stupid. we've never had it so good with regards to stability.
you have a mac so that may put a few problems to bed already.

No problems here. IMO you should update your Mac regardless, lots of apps now require at least Lion to run, plus Mavericks is a free update and is quite frankly a massive improvement on Snow Leopard (I stuck with Snow Leopard for ages and now feel a bit dumb for not upgrading sooner).

While we're on this... does anyone know whether the hardware driver was properly updated to run on Mavericks? I haven't read anything contrary, but I'd just like to make sure. My iMac's still on OSX Lion and I'd love to upgrade to Mavericks, too, but I don't want to mess with a half-arsed beta driver just to be able to use the Ren on it.

as i heard with Maverics things aren't so stable + it consumes much more CPU for same projects???

i am very against updates, i've learned my lessons on Windows before and Pro Tools stuff, when i was dealing more with system than producing, so i bought Mac and been very pleased since.

Now i know there are some major updates in 1.7 so i might give it a shot, but i don't know if Reaper + all the VSTs would still work on Maverics or 10.9, that is my big problem as well?

If i hate something (as i mentioned before) is dealing and losing time with system updates, configuration etc, i don't have enough time to make music, so time is very precious to me + i also lost a lot of projects before because of updates...

Use superduper to create a current system clone on an external USB or firewire drive (or make two clones, just in case). Restart mac holding down option key and boot from the clone to make sure it's working fine.

Reboot to your normal boot disk and update this to Mavericks via app store (or if you prefer, do a clean install and use Migration assistant to transfer your apps over from your clone or time machine).

If you have problems, use superduper to copy your old system back to your boot disk.

Really takes no time at all - maximum 2 hours, most of which you can be downstairs eating your dinner and doing the washing up. Just make sure you have enough hardware resources to run Mavericks, 8GB memory minimum IMO.

thanks this is gold i will probably try this, when i make a research first about Reaper and other VSTs compatibility.

Nice hint, thanks. Didn't know about this superduper stuff, always wondered whether it's possible to use two seperate installations of OSX.

I already use 1.7 on OSX Lion and it's running fine, it's only the drivers that kept me off updating. I'd just hate to either lose the ability to use the Ren as an interface or using it with an unstable and unapproved driver.
