All music technology was expensive in the early 80's; this was not specific to Linn, so we cannot use the expense of his 80's products to suggest that he was always making niche/novelty products.

What I wanted to point out was that Linn products were REALLY high-end products (really expensive), even compared with other electric music products of that time.

yeah.. he is not working for a company to mass produce products like when he was with akai... his target market is not the person who will be bought a midi controller for christmas... dave smith sells less products than some of the companies he worked for, does that mean he is out of touch?
