Akai's choice on names

MPC Medieval
MPC Renaissance
MPC Baroque

I personally don't care what they call this MPC. MPC 6000 Studio Plus, MPC 6000 Studio, MPC i6000. But you gentleman would rename it anyway....MPC 3500, MPC 4500, MPC 5500 based upon how you feel it measures up to legacy MPCs you own or wish you own.

Some of you should go back and read your old thread posts. Everytime an MPC is released one or more of you (users and non-users alike) complain about available RAM...or wonder what type of processor is inside. You guys go on to talk about how mother boards are so cheap and they could easily put one in there that supports multigiga bytes. You say that processing is slow and that computers can do sample editing faster with more powerful tools, etc, etc. Really? The same thing is said when ALL workstations are released.

So then Akai designs an open system MPC and says:

....pick your mother board....pick the CPU you like...and as much memory as you like...choose your harddrives. And by the way, we kept the same interface you loved to use...and even made two of them extremely portable.

Then you reply:

...okay. But now it can't run without a computer. Its not an MPC anymore..you tricked us.

Hint: there has never been a shortage of MPCs. Every model ever created can be found on eBay and Craigslist and are still heavily suported by numerous 3rd parties.

I think something more accurate would be a good name.

I wouldn't use the MPC in the name. MPC is a brand and AKAI knows this. When loyalists think of MPC, they think of everything that has come before the Ren, Studio, and Fly. In order to sell these new hybrid models, AKAI had to give it the MPC name, because people know what that is... The general public doesn't necessarily know who AKAI is, but they know MPC. So I guess from a business standpoint, you can't really blame them, but I still think its the biggest misnomer in the history of MPC's.

Maybe they should have come up with something more clever like they did with the MPD and MPK... Unless of course the MPCenter truly is dead and MPController really is the future of AKAI products.

I was just watching an radio show with Araab a few years back. He was doing his thing live on air. The DJ asked him if MPC had contacted him for a deal of some sort. Not Akai...but MPC. Those three letters has been apart of hip-hop and R&B history for 25 years. These new products continue that tradition with the same workflow. I think when people sit down and create music on one, they are going to realize quickly as they go through the different modes and look at the screens that there will be very little to no learning curve if you have ever used an MPC before. Callin an MPC anything but an MPC is not the right move. Technics 1200s are still called 1200s for a reason.(I want a new one....prices doubled since early 2000s).

When you put it this way, it makes sense. Given the long history that the MPC has, I don't think they really had the option to call it anything else. I hope you're right regarding the user experience side of things. Not only that, I hope they can improve upon it. I'm still on the fence about it. It's a bold move to say the least.

the word is french I believe...

and they used the MPC name in this series of products for the same reason they changed the appropriately titled MPC3500 to MPC5000.... hype and interest...

I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble spelling the damn word... I'm sure that's why we all call it the "Ren". Not a good name at all.

I can imagine a bunch of dudes thinking they are clever in a meeting room and voting for suggestions.... and for some reason, everyone picked that f'd up name.

I call it MPC Ren as a term of endearment. Its the MC Ren (NWA) of the MPC line...

Ren= MPC 3562500

Studio = MPC 600

Fly = MPC THANG VIRTUAL

If you guys study art, renaissance means "game changer" or "rebirth". During the hellenistic era, art was painted in a 2D fashion, like old 8bit platformers and that method was considered standard. But then peeps like DaVinci and Donatello was painting in a 3D fashion that brought in the Renaissance era. It blew people's minds and the hellenistic style of paintings was a thing of the past.

Not saying the Ren is a game changer but it'll have to do something that revolutionize the way we make music and that has yet to come.

Only time will tell...but I think it really will be...especially with different models at different price points. Having the same software is a huge selling point IMO. Without hesitation, I am buying both models.
