Honestlly, the mpc1000 seems like the sure shot to me.
1.price
2.portability
3.Its not discontinued (as far as i know),
4.the akai os format will be supported by the new mpc ren
5.option to upgrade to jjos and then its pretty much the mpc2500 and better than the 2000xl OS feature wise
6.will hold you over until you get the new mpc

Downsides:
1.smaller pads
2.no tilt screen
3.may be out of your budget if you really want to get the new mpc

Not sure if this is totally accurate but I think i can speculate and say that the closer to the launch of the new mpc line, the cheaper used mpc units will go for. so maybe hold out as long as you can?
