Confirmed, Renaissance does not work without a computer, utter joke. At least Maschine was crafted to be a hybrid for people who desired that. An MPC that can't work on it's own is like one of those electric candles, pointless AND tacky

I got the info that it is not a standalone From Saintjoe at Soundsandgear. And James has brought up a bunch of evidence that makes it seem pretty undeniable.

Look on the bright side, it has black knobs. At least they will become more readily available :D

Just Akai keeping that key detail somewhat cloudy makes me think this thing is not a standalone MPC, the fact that no RAM specs are listed for example, and the lack of 8 analog outs with the assumption you'll split them through the software. So I guess it's an MPC OS better suited for standalone hardware being run on a computer which seems incredibly underwhelming the more you consider it.

I think it is pretty clear that it is not standalone, which is cool, it depends on how the product is well designed.
They gave the acronym "MPC" to the different meaning; Music Production Controller.

Looks to be MPD type plastic sides with a metal plate on top. I wonder how solid the thing will be. The metal plate on the bottom of the MPD24 for example was thicker than what got used on the MPD32. The internal components on the Renaissance would leave it light with no standalone features. I'm assuming it has no HD and these 6GB of samples (I'm sorry but I can't believe that's being touted as a feature if it's old Akai floppy content) are copied of a DVD.

I'm feeling the software aspect of it though. Hopefully they copied all of JJ's ideas. The pads look like crap, but overall I'm kinda digging the idea. Time will tell.

DAMN THIS THREAD EXPLODED LOLOLOL

All the hate aside, this could be good for those of us who aren't wanting to jump the Ableton/mashine bandwagon, but also who KNEW a new hardware MPC was pretty much a pipe dream.

I also noticed a few of you are a tad hypocritical, bitching about this not being a "real" MPC while you're using ableton or mashine :lol: :lol:

I shall reserve ALL judgement of the Nukai product until I'm able to see more specs or get my hands on one to try out.

Deja Vu.....everything you are guys are saying is exactly what was said about the release of the MPC 1000...then the 2500...then the 500...and most recently the MPC 5000. So many people here were "insulted" that Akai named it the MPC 5000 because it didn't support higher sample rates/bit depth, no keygroup programs, limited memory, etc. And then when NI dropped Maschine some of the same people in this thread predicted the end of Akai. Now the new MPC is a hybrid like Maschine and you still are not happy. I also want to point out that in 2009, I wrote a thread about a hybrid MPC. Some of you actually liked the idea. I also wrote several threads about what I would like to see added to Maschine. This appears to be the answer.

Anyway.....all this ranting is taking you away from your (insert favorite MPC here) that you love so much.

i personally think its pretty lame to try to reinvent the same brand over and over again just because of some cult status in the past.
mpc = midi production center
then they changed it to music production center when midi got less popular.
now its music production controller because controllers are popular?

i mean, i totally see where they are coming from - by calling it an mpc, it gets all this instant cred and hype - even if it's not an mpc at all.

i just personally think its a little weak to modify the reputation to make new products look more appealing. just gonna create more clueless, disappointed people like the ones we have that come in here saying they bought a vintage mpc for the sound, and how do they connect it to their computer.
:roll:

The name was changed to Music Production Center because it added features that makes it more than just a MIDI sequencer. It has nothing to do with the popularity of MIDI.

@Jamon
You should modify your post because it can be taken the wrong way.

The good news for any poor sap who buys this is that JJ can probably bring back the PC version of JJOS updated for use with this controller. Only cost you another hundred bones or so... and once again, Akai gets a pass.

I must add that JJOS wouldn't be ported to this new "MPC".

JJOS was made by modifying original OS source code which is stored in the hardware. This new machine would be software based.

Realistically you'd have to create a piece of software that can communicate with this MPC for PC and mac. And then create a totally new OS for the MPC by reverse engineering the code as it would be much different.

It's on a totally different level.

Obviously you missed the JJOS native PC version from a year or two ago. It was a big deal over in the JJOS forum because most users didn't want JJ to divert any resources from regular JJOS. JJ shelved it. I don't see why it couldn't easily be brought back and adapted for this controller.
