if the only thing the mpc uses from the pc is the CPU power

this is probably the answer to everyone who gripes that the new mpc ren is not standalone. on top of that prices of used mpc's are falling.

there is no 'answer' to anyone griping about it not being standalone. it is a valid point for some people ... i am seeing a lot of people write this sentiment off because it's not how they work, but it is a huge deal for some people.

what do i want in a new mpc? simple.
a 2kxl with a ton of ram, modern storage, usb interface, more filters, and ability to do most functions with seq running. there is not an mpc that does that last one - and that's a big room for improvement. im not holding my breath - im just trying to answer HF's question reasonably.

but please yall cant write someone off saying 'just use yer computer' - i dont have a computer i can move around with me and even if i did i just prefer dedicated outboard for stuff like this. there are many others too.

it shouldn't be a debate - the mpc ren shouldn't change, and the people who want hardware shouldn't just change their style - they can both coexist and they dont have to buy the new thing just cause it says mpc on it. octatrack looks pretty nice anyway

I love hardware as much as the next guy but.... if it's that big of an issue just grab a mac mini or something and tape it to the side of the ren LOL

I think and this is speculation... but I think alot of hardware heads that scream no to the ren using a computer.. if it's done right, when they get the hands on and actually use it,,, those gripes will disappear.

I've been making beats a long time now and taught a lot of people how to use mpcs and other hardware... those same guys that looked at me like I was crazy when I was messing with maschine now after teaching maschine to em act like they never had an issue with software. (and no I'm not saying maschine and the ren are the same... they are two totally different styles of approach)

there will always be a room for stand alone hardware, I keep stand alone hardware in my lab but on the real... it doesn't have much of an advantage ... it's just nice to sometimes have a different workflow.

man just think what gear will be like 10 years from now...

hell yes, i remember those days too. now THAT was a gyp.

....but the most reasonably priced MPC at that time. MPC 4000s were $2500-$4000 depending on the model. I was selling second-hand MPC 2000s (32 MB Ram, floppy disk) for $800. Second hand 2000XL were going for $1000 plus as new ones were still going for just under $1900 or so.
