Mini is fine as long as it matches your required connectivity.
That has been the only real problem I have dealt with using them.

If you are planning on it being a stopgap you should try to go refurbished or even used from a reputable dealer to reduce your cost.

Yeah i5 should be ok ,

No problems with a 2012 i7 mac mini here. Unlike the 2014 models, these older ones are also easy to DIY upgrade (SSD, memory) - I believe the 2014 mac minis are not user upgradeable at all - for example, memory is soldered in at the factory so you have to max it out at the time of ordering (and pay twice the price).
