Bug reports & end-user support for Akai's MPC Software 'controllers' including the new MPC Studio 2, the MPC Touch, MPC Renaissance & original MPC Studio and MPC StudioB lack.

Actually...the real question is....how much latency is acceptable for some hardware MPC users to embrace the Ren? Akai's goal was to get it under 5ms...Dan said he acheived under 3ms on a Mac.

How other drivers fare is not relevant as you can choose to use any interface you like. The Ren only has 4 audio outs. I will certainly use my own audio interface whose I/O capabilities far exceed the Ren's.

If you feel the Ren's price tag isn't worth it, get yourself a Studio and spend the $700 you saved on an RME or Apogee 2/4 channel interface.

the drivers are far from an irrelevant issue (especially when reading the EIE feedback). MPC Studio, that would be a serious downgrade for me... personally i would rather save $1K and just buy the software so i can import/edit my MPC hardware projects and avoid tracking. you know if software alone will be available? or is it software+controller bundle only like maschine?

As of now, Akai stated that the Ren/Studio + software is a package deal. The software will not work without the hardware.

I don't mean to insult anyone by saying drivers are not relevant. I don't know anything about the EIE. What I can say is that I am impressed with the Ren's drivers. Yet, I will still use a higher-end interface.

JAH wrote:As far as those having latency issues with Maschine....I have never had those issues even when using my Fantom G as the sound card. It can't be said enough...if you use Ren or Maschine like you would a hardware MPC, there is no latency issues what so ever. If you are using functions that can tax your CPU such as plugins...eventually you will have to start adjusting buffer settings. Increased buffer settings will have an impact on real time performance. This occurs wilth all software products.

So to say, "Products like Ren/Maschine/Spark suck because I have 128 VST instruments/effects running and it can't match the timing/latency of my MPC 1000 w/128MB of samples running JJOS"...is simply dumb if you claim to be knowledgable on music production in any capacity.

Yeah man, I gave up on this argument around these part a while ago! I don't know how many times I've said this same thing, yet, these threads constantly pop up!

I agree. Latency is one thing but distortion , stability , crackling , and dropouts are more serious issue.

Are the Ren's driver free from these ailments that are present in Akai audio interfaces?

this is what i get with maschine if i use two or more vsts, but thats cos maschine is not multi core, but i would not expect drops outs and crackles to be an issue until multiple vsts come into play.

but most peeps just want to see ren fail because it is not standalone

What are the two VSTs, sound card (buffer settings, sample rate, etc), and specs of the PC/Mac you are using when you have these issues?

I don't want to see it fail. Im hoping it will succeed .. It's just all about the track record though.. Especially in the software hardware hybrid market.. Although i've never tried the eie interfaces i've read a bit about them as i was interested in getting one to interface it with the mpc1000.. But after reading all the shit about it i avoided it..
It's the time you spend trying to fix the hybrid computer setup(if you run into problems) that gets me.. Hybrids setups are never %100 percent sure because its the components of the computer side are never the same.. So while you mite try out maschine on your mates setup and it runs fabulous, when you go out and by the same spec computer but it has a diff motherboard diff ram diff usb chipset, you can run into issues... At least when you pay more for a standalone unit, its the same. and if the company has great after sales support, you will have more confidence in spending more money with them for a newer product/upgrades.. I hardly sequence with computers now.(use vsti) I mainly track with them... And i use keyboards synths and samplers as hardware and track in as i play/live straight into the daw.. This way i avoid any latency issues but i get the best of audio shaping and arranging when using the daw.

Back on topic..

I think the answer is not concrete but its this "it all depends on your computer setup(software and hardware) when it comes to latency with the ren"..

The bottom line is this, if Akai released a hardware MPC, no one would be using VST's with it. So if people use the Ren the same way without VST's, they'll have no pops and clicks and latency.

Now, they could midi up the hardware MPC to their interface and sequence VST's that way. And if their computer couldn't handle it, they would likely get pops and clicks on the computer just as if they used Ren and use VST's. So it works the same way!

Pretty much any new off-the-shelf PC is spec'd to easily run the Ren:

1. Mac: 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended) Mac OS X 10.6 or later DVD-ROM drive

2.Windows: 2 GHz Pentium® 4 or Celeron® compatible CPU or faster (multicore CPU recommended) 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended) Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit) DVD-ROM drive

Now read what I am about to write very carefully (perhaps three times even).....there isn't a product in my studio that has poorly written drivers or garbage sound.

Now attempting to stay of topic "How comparable is the latency of ren vs hardware mpc's?".....What latency performace MUST the Ren be able to achieve to meet your expectations/satisfaction? 10ms? 5ms? 2ms?

Now you can read this......you wouldn't tell us if it did. There's a reason you stay nonspecific. :smoker:
