Wondering what an MPC will do in the future has become the nature of these forums. There are thousands of posts here before the Ren/Studio was a glimmer in Dan's eyes about what hardware MPCs can't do and what they should do in the future. This goes back as far as the MPC 1000 and then 2500. Before then, there were no feature requests threads in this forum or people demanding things. You got your MPC 2000/2000XL and used as is. The same goes for the MPC 60 and 3000. Now we have the JJ OS Forum. Basically a forum full of wet dreams about what is coming next and forum members fighting to be the first to post that a new update is available. :smoker:

So personally, I am not surprised by these types of discussions. And I wager that 1 year from now, the same discussions will continue. If/when a new MPC is released....same cycle.

...making the mpc nothing but a controler will always be a wrong decision to me...

...if you're into drumpad controlers and software, trust those who work on software since their early days...ni....maschine might be a ripp off in first place...but it's a damned good one....

if you want a real music instrument on it's own....you can't top a mpc 1000/2500 with a jjos...that's the real deal...still...and forever...

end of the day, akai can't compete with companies like ni when it comes to pure coding...

and there are so many big changes up to come in the computer market.....

with the ren, in two years you gonna end up to be forced working with old mac and windows os because akai simply could'nt catch up anymore and leave you all with an unfinished product from yesterday....

but hey....i hope they proove me wrong....

when i got my first mpc....it was THE alternative to computers...
and that is the outstanding advantage until today....

akai and nukai never made it happen that the standard mpc os could compete with something like jjos....on their own platform dealing with just one common cell phone chip...!
how can you expect them to compete and succeed when it comes to serious software solutions where you have to deal with external plug in formats, different hosts, different chip generations, multiprocessors and mainframe updates by others...?

you simply can't pay that off, by some ren customers on a long distance....sofware engineering is a constant catch up competition....you never can stop diggin'......and that's very expensive.....
in ten years from now, you still can buy a mpc 60 or 3000....but you won't find any rens, i'm afraid....

just take a look at the poor progress they make on ios with the fly and the mpc app....the platform where even companies like ni are making the bigger bucks these days....

..... standalone hardware....makes the difference....
and a hardware mpc with jjos will even be a weapon and a studio on it's own in twenty years from now, when we all got chips under our skin and we finally get brain to midi....

Even if a Ren/Studio users never upgrades their computer, operating system, plugins, etc they will still be able to use it in 10 years the way they use it today.

^ huh? a decade is light years in terms of computer technology.. everybody needs to upgrade at a certain point making indeed ren DOA if nukai ever dropped it's support.. let's face it software based instruments is a bad (depreciating) investment. the one license transfer is also a bad joke, clearly an attempt to kill second hand market profit loss..
By reeloy Wed Sep 04, 2013 11:51 am
....well, true...i'm not an update and next feature geek at all....

but my first mpc, 18 years old by now, still works....
the oldest computer that still does so, er, got seven years on it's back and starts leavin' me....

what can i say....an hardware mpc is cheaper to get, easier to sell and stands for it's own....and if you need a computer anyway, there's nothing you could'nt do with it that a computerslavecontrolertablediscompc can do....

apart from the fact that almost every audio interface around 300 bucks plus has better converters and tighter drivers than the ren.....

no bash.....fact.

Poor argument. if you are doing music production as a business, I believe you can write off depreciation of 'assets' from what I remember from taking Accounting I. Rest easy.

1 year later from now . .

- Jay will have 10,000 posts
- Maschine will still be far ahead of the Ren
- Akai folks will be saying 'youre going to love the next update'

one of the most boring soap operas ever....

1 yr later hope akai realizes the unpopular outcome of their decision was on choosing the middle link between this forum n them n how much it crippled people's perception of the product

  agree on all points, but i guess maschine being 'far ahead' is subjective. Depends totally on what you're looking for from a pad controller with tightly integrated computer software.

Getting way off subject again.

I pretty much hyped up every flagship MPC released. If you let my opinions about a drum machine change how you receive it for the worst...you have much bigger issues to deal with. And I bet you are still using the hardware MPC(s) I hyped up.

- I think so as there are a lot of Ren users here that need a helping hand.
- Own that too...compared them side by side....far from accurate. Try it yourself
- As well as I. And they have yet to disappoint with an update IMO. I went through a lot of bug reports here. And many of them have been fixed. And the most popular feature requests have been added.

I couldn't agree more with everything you just said. Standalone hardware will always have a longer lifespan and better secondhand value than a pc-based controller tied to a company with a very underwhelming track record of support and coding expertise. Even if Jah was right, their limits on installation of the software kill any chance I'd buy a Ren or Studio at any price. These are devices for people who don't care about obsolescence or who don't understand how technology evolves.

Tell Konc3pt to try to sell his MV-8800. They were going for under $500 on eBay not too long ago...even in Japan their second hand price is that low.

If you are buying new, trust me, ring around and negotiate and you'll almost certainly be offered a new Ren for under $1k.

Buying second hand - remember that only one license transfer is officially allowed, so you could struggle to sell it on. I'm not sure if Akai are sticking rigidly to this policy.

I can confirm at least here in Los Angeles. There is an authorized dealer here that will sell you a new Ren for $850. Not a good sign for the value of this device in the futre in my opinion. :Sigh:

You must have not been in the MPC 'game' when all the hardware MPCs were being manufactured and sold for hundreds below the advertised priced. :Sigh:

I just set my Maschine library as a favorite in the MPC and load the Maschine sounds directly from the hard drive. No need to load Maschine as a plugin.

I tried this, but I couldn't access my maschine folder on my mpc pref, did u copy the maschine library to another folder that the Ren could access?
