The Presets are metallic? or the Raw oscillator sounds are metallic?

Software synths don't cost a lot for a reason. IF anything, you aren't paying for the PRESETS (sounds that are already made - because they're easy to make), what you really are paying for is the potential of the synth. A software synth company can have a team of 10 members making presets for a synthesizer so that future consumers can use it & find it inspiring. 10 members will have different tastes, different ears.. They wouldn't spend weeks making 5 amazing quality presets - it would cost too much labor, it would waste time, and be harder to sell. Instead, they would spend about 1-3 minutes making a preset.

10 members x 3 minutes = 30 preset patches already made in 3 minutes.
Now after 1 hour... that's:
10 members x 60 = 600 preset patches

Let's fit 1000000 presets in a software synth which take up 10 kb of space or less.

Why do I mention time investment into creating a sound?
Take the Roland JUNOs.. goto your local music store and play around with it. (Doesn't matter if we're comparing hardware / software.. you can make both sound completely the same to a non-professional ear). Roland, Moog, Kurz, Korg, Virus, ..they will all sound inspiring. I might be jumping the gun right here but after selling and demo-ing alot of keyboards and synth, I'd say: reputable manufactures with limited harddisk space will always have better sounding, more-time invested synths.

You can obtain a software synth with 100000000 sounds, with only 3 of them being "inspiring". It's normal. It always happens. It can also be just your taste in music & what you're looking for.

Every synth will always start metallic-sounding. Synths are another word for oscillators.. which in most cases come in 3 basic wave forms: sin waves, square waves, triangle waves.

a sin wave will sound soft and smooth
a square wave will sound like a nintendo
a triangle wave will sound something from a trance / techno music

The power of synths are really amazing:
Our job with the synth is to use those 3 types of waves, mix them together, and create a sound of:
1. dog
2. growling
3. explosion
4. chorus sound
5. synth pad
6. bass
7.
...possibilities are endless.

Of course, you can always use the presets, adjust the equalizer, add some 3rd party filters to really shape the sound. It's all in the way YOU shape the sound.

My Top 10:
1. Native Instruments Massive

All we really need are 1,2,3 oscillators, maybe not even the 3rd. It's the filtering and effects that really matter.

Go on google, Search: top 10 vst
Check out Future Music Magazine's website on VST and filter plugging

Those are main stream. Some freelance synth maker's work will be on there as well.

Too many to name but you can't go wrong with (in no particular order):
1. Motu Mach Five 3
2. Komplete (Kontakt, Battery, etc)
3. Omnishpere
4. Arturia (various plugins)

Yeah, Akai plugins are just Romplers not synths, nothing to do with sound design, more than toys but.. not so far from, but really far from a "Nexus 2".

Synth :
U-he Diva ( Analog modeled sound, very good filters )
U-he Zebra ( Massive direct opponent)
Lennard Digital Sylenth 1 ( A reference )
Rob Papen SubBoomBass ( Designed for Bass Synthesis )
Rob Papen Predator ( Good filters, Arp and lot of good stuff)
NI Massive ( Limitless sound designing )
Spectrasonic Omnisphere & Trillian ( Fatty synths sounds )
Plogue Chipsounds (Retrogaming sounds)
Memorymoon, Messiah, Me80 ( Vintage Synth models )
And a lot of Free plugins synths are really good to create with to. Look for TAL ones.

Sample Player for all other kind of instruments :
KONTAKT 5 ( Very great 3rd party library offer )
By far the best sampling system to me and a very stable plugin unless you load gigantic multi ^^

Drums :
The REN or KONTAKT or Stylus RMX or any drumming plugin like EZ Drummer :)

All tested and working for me on x32 MPC software WIN7, just try it on a x64 system and give feedback !.

Thanks !

I got Diva and TAL U NO LX.

Another top choice would be lush-101 from D16 but i only use the demo so far.

They worked fine on my system on 1.3.1 as 32 bits plugins and now they work fine on 1.4 update as 64 bits plugins.

For a complete rounded package of FX plugins to use with the MPC look no further than

http://www.toneboosters.com/

Seriously, don't let the price fool you. Alot of these plugins (if not all) can hold their weight with anything out there (waves, sonnox, etc...) You can get the whole bundle for a little over $100

If anything the compressor, barricade (mastering limiter), and the Reelbus are worth it alone. Barricade is up there with Elephant, L2, Pro-L. Some people have dumped the Waves Kramer tape for the Reelbus instead, needless to say they are worth checking out.

It's weird how a low price can seem like it's probably low quality but that is not the case with these plugs.

If I had to pick just one synth or synth package in this case it would have to be

FXpansion DCAM Synth Squad. Super good sound and insanely versatile with some of the best built in FX.
