MPC Studio Hardware Problems

I just bought an MPC Studio. I already registered my software license with my REN. ONce I got the studio and hooked it up, it will not connect with the software unless I press shift for no more than 2 seconds while simultaneously pressing the power button after the software has loaded. Is this normal? Everything works just fine once I get it to work but, I don't like that I have to do that just to get it to connect.

MPC Soft 1.7, Firmware 1.10, MBP Mid 2009, OSX 10.9.4
