Automation for snares what am i doing wrong?

I have the MPC studio and i'm trying to use the automation for a snare i tried following a few tutorials,but nothing works like they show in the video's.when i'm in "Track Mixer" i get no option to insert an effect it's just grayed out but,in "Program Mixer" i have the options.should i have each sound on a different track(which is what i did for the snare to add effect" or should i put the snare on a different program? here's a picture of the "Track Mixer"grayed out. would appreciate the help. thanks.

Also when i tried to "automate"the effect (pushing over dub) to record the effect nothing is saved or recorded.
