Can somone show me how to use automation for 1.8 and up?

I never really got into using automation. I know what automation is, but im a bit confused on how to go about it. Lets say i wanted to use a filter for a certain sequence, or for a certain sample or kick and snare. If there is any video tutorials out there that you can show me, I would gladly appreciate that! Thanks!

Load up a sample, apply a filter to it, press play, press the q link trigger button or whatever its called (the one on the bottom left), turn the q link knob corresponding to the filter cutoff and enjoy.
