Bug reports & end-user support for Akai's MPC Software 'controllers' including the new MPC Studio 2, the MPC Touch, MPC Renaissance & original MPC Studio and MPC StudioB lack.

Hi there,

Does anyone know when Akai MPC Ren 2 will be released? I saw some video footage that is nearly 2 years old and it had something that looked like mpc ren 2 prototype displayed on the desk. What interested me is that the device seems to be standalone. I would love to put my hands on a new mpc that doesn't need a computer to run and is build like a tank :)

I know the one you mean, I dont have any info on it though. i guess its possible as apparently it would be standalone and running windows software with touchscreen. since the MPC touch has just been launched, i doubt it will be anytime soon.

Nobody knows whether they've shelved the Windows MPC or not. Hopefully they'll release a Ren 2 along with standalone versions of both the Touch and Ren 2.

Maybe they'll do something even more impressive...

That was nothing but a 'proof of concept' rather than a proper working prototype - this was a Microsoft seminar designed to showcase what is theoretically possible with the Windows Embedded OS . That MPC concept may never come to market - you'll just have to wait and see what the future brings.

We already have MPCs that don't need computer's to run and are built like tanks - MPC3000, MPC60, MPC4000, MPC2000XL, MPC2500 etc. 8)

Is touchscreen a great idea for an mpc ? Well... surely it can be spared for a higher quality tactile switches that last 5 000 000 operations like Omron does. I love how mpc renaissance looks. It takes the best from old gear although i like bigger and heavier stuff like mpc 4000, mpc 62 and my roland mv. They need to go in a certain direction cause it seems like they have no idea what to do now. They would want to satisfy everyone and it's not possible. They need to focus on what mpc's were always known for and why they became legendary then improve the existing designs to be more cost effective and durable. Just my 2 cents ;)

I understand friend. I thought that it was something more of 'a sneak peak for mpc heads' where cautious eyes would spot an upcoming akai gear. Despite the big screen and my disapproval for black/red design I was really excited to buy it anytime soon.

When it comes to mpc's that are 'build like a tanks' hehe... I currently own Akai mpc 2000 classic that is all perect except for screen that died long time ago (although backlight is still very bright). Besides my mpc 2000 I have Roland MV 8000 which I just adore, and akai s1000, s2000 and s3000. In the past I owned akai mpc 1000 rev.2 although I have only bad memories with that device. Tactile switches were dying one by another after just 2 months and the entire thing was certainly overheating near the screen area (probably a power supply was underneath it). In the past I nearly laid my paws on akai mpc 3000 (not LE) but I got robbed by an user of this forum and lost my chance to own a one as well as money that I had for it... :/

My dream mpc was always Akai mpc 60 II. I love that big booty laundry machine, I'm all crazy about it. Also I wouldn't complain if I would get E-MU SP 1200 but that's another story...

Btw. what do you guys think about my idea? I was thinking 'what would be an ideal mpc for 2016' and I came up with this:

1. 240x104 LCD display with integrated OS allowing to switch to 'dot matrix mode emulation' (old school, for heads that can't live without visible square pixels).

2. USB port in/out

3. Soft pads just like akai mpc 2000/2000xl

4. Durable, sturdy tactile switches like akai s1000 and akai mpc 60/3000 had

5. Analogue routing simillar or the same like akai mpc 3000 and akai mpc 60, easily interchangable with a single toggle-switch

6. Basic functions of the machine available as a standalone. By that I mean sequencing, layering, song mode, step edit, mute groups and sample banks.

7. Advanced functions of the machine available upon hooking it up with original mpc software. That is to say: vst/vsti support (including 3rd party stuff), advanced and clearer sequencing, sample chopping and increased computing capabilities (a true hybrid mixing CPU & RAM power of standalone mpc with CPU & RAM of your PC)

8. I'm sorry for that but geez how i miss the Abrams T90 tank size samplers... . If it would be 3/4 of mpc 62's height, width and length then I would be more than pleased.

9. Remember the good times, don't embrace them only in promotional vids for controllers that pretend to be true mpc's. Make main record, overdub, play, stop, play start buttons square like they were before. Protect the letter layer from wearing out. Use sturdy data control wheel just like on mpc 3000, s1000 and mpc 60/62. Don't be ashamed of using high quality components, they cost pennies when you consider that end-user is paying 1299$ for the device (just a price example).

10. Keeping in mind the previous point, use high quality magnet tapes, tactile switches, screens and pad sensors. It often costs just a dollar more but instead of cheap chinese ish you get japanese quality which was always outstanding. Create MPC's that will last another 20 years without major flaws. These devices are known for durability and let it like that. Release limited editions which will surely get increased value over a time which you can use to your own benefit either charging more for LE or re-selling LE's to so-called 'second hand markets' like ebay.

11. Don't forget about 8-out. We love mpc's for their oldschool, we use computer daily, we use old 8 track recorders like TASCAM's etc. We hook things up with mixers and classic analogue synths. Don't take the 8 out. It's cheap nowadays but improves the end-quality of your product.

12. The OS must be bug-less. At least for basic capabilities of the standalone machine. I can't worry about data loss anymore.

13. Leave it oldschool with ability for user to choose a skin for a device. Release 2 color versions of a device but allow users to choose from multiple easily appliable magnetic layers (skins) for the device. If someone want it to be like mpc 2500, let him be. It's pennies but huge satisfaction from end-user. If someone wants it to be like akai mpc 60 let him be, he'll shit his pants when he'll decor his flagship mpc to look just like an old school gear.

14. Side panels need to be durable.

Tell me guys what do you think about my idea :)

They can't win either way with that quote. If a Ren 2 standalone or controller comes out shorty after the Touch a lot of the Touch buyers will be pissed off.

That's a valid argument.

Usually when they anouce and/ or launch a new product or line, it's the complete series.

so what could the other two product be apart from a larger ren sized unit; would they also

make an even smaller unit? cos everyone says that there are two other mystery products
