I'm setting up my new music space and need some help with the best way to setup the Midi settings (inside the Ren software) and cabling (in/out/thru) from device to device. At the link below is a diagram of all devices, how they are connected (Midi or USB), and the amount of Midi channels needed for each. The locations of the devices (in the diagram) are relative to where they are located in the room. Any help would be appreciated.

First you need to decide what your main sequencer is going to be, the MPC ren, the korg SQ-1, the ASR-10, PC etc. From there you probably want the Alesis pads MIDI out to the sequencer MIDI in. If you use the ren as the main brain of the setup you can have up to 4 MIDI outs to 4 different chains of devices. The ATC-1 for example is a monophoic synth with a MIDI Thru so you might want it as channel 1 in a chain, then from the MIDI thru to the MIDI in of the next piece which you might set to channel 2. It all depends on how many parts each piece will play. You might want more than one channels of patches from the roland or the motif. To get real surgical you could sync the ren to ableton and use the motu MIDI time piece to send out to all your gear.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that indeed the MPC will be the master sequencer. The SQ1 will be only be used as a MIDI --> CV converter for my Octave Cat. A few questions.

- If a device has USB, like the Blofeld, and I use it to connect it to the computer, will it greatly reduce the amount of channels I can use inside the Ren due to the Ren only having 4 output 'slots' in the Midi settings?

- Since I'm only using the Ren software to do all of my work in, is there a way to use the MOTU to control all of the gear vs. the Ren? I know you mentioned Abelton, and the ability to sync it with the Ren to do this. Is there another way, without using Abelton?

Thanks for the help
