Support and chat about Akai's range of MIDI controllers, including the MPD. MPK and LPD

Hello! Great forum you guys have here.

Was just on another forum trying to register, but failed to answer the anti-bot question "What kind of cable connects your instrument to the computer?" . . Tried "Audio", "HI-Z", "Instrument".. and everything I could think of, including my setup which is RCA to Quarter Inch to Eighth Inch....

Anyways~!

I am trying to set the pads on the MPD to cut each other. Running the MPD MIDI into my Korg MicroSAMPLER.

Looking to get the MPD to sustain a key press until another pad is hit, then sustaining that key. (monophonic hold & replace?)

Any suggestions? You guys seem like the best resource :)

Thanks & Peace be with you all

The MPD pads are just triggers (note on, duration, note off type stuff). If you want samples to cut each other out, you normally program that into your sampler. Look into POLYPHONY settings, MUTE GROUPS or whatever else Korg may call these things.

Thanks, Clint!

I really appreciate the response.

Looks like I will be using my Yamaha Keytar with mono mode + sustain switch to achieve what I'm trying to accomplish.

Again, thanks for your reply! :smoker:

Well you could do that too, but he meant just go into the sampler setting on the Korg and see if you can set sounds to polyphony = one voice to have them cut off themselves and the other samples.

The MPD itself only can give you the ability to edit the MIDI Note # the pad sends, change the pad behavior from momentary to toggle, and pad pressure behavior.

Metatron72 - That's really what I was asking, in a round-about way. Thanks for your insight. Might not be the right board to ask but, While you're at it, any ideas on external triggers that would do what I'm asking? The Korg MS-1 does not have options itself, that's why I'm looking for an external controller.

I'm sure this Roland MV-8800 does the trick, but its way too big just for that.

Any help is huge. -thank you!-

Well like Clint said any MIDI out from anything is not going to have any bearing on the voice/sound cutoff/mute groups (if available). That has to be handled by the hardware or software that is receiving the MIDI from the external controller.

The MV-8880 if it was housing the samples definitely has pad cutoff/polyphony one set by user/mute groups as part of it's feature set. I never used one outside of a store demo unit, but it has all those basic MPC style features.

I know from reading reviews that the Korg is limited but you would think there has to be at least the polyphony set to one option or some basic way to make one MIDI note being received have the next trigger message cutoff the sound of the previous one.

I just had a quick look at the Korg's manual and at a quick glance I'm not seeing any typical voice settings/mute groups type settings. Closest thing I see so far is that after a pattern is recorded you can mute any of the sequenced samples that you have previously recorded. Not really what you want although i guess some clever triggering and then muting after could get some of what you want, but it's not quite what you want.

It's such a common feature that I want to keep looking to see if I'm missing something although I would not be surprised if any feature that might help with this would be more limited. The start and end point stuff could used in a really roundabout way to get a similar result, but it's kind of like trying to "fake" something that if you would want to do on the fly in a really tedious way. You'd have to first imagine all the ways you want the sounds to cutoff as far as length and actually edit the start end points to match. Doable I guess but not much fun, and way too much work for something so simple.

I was looking at the section starting on page 27 of the PDF manual.

I'll look around some more, hopefully I'm just missing something even if the kind of functionality you want is limited.

But again if you have an MV-8800 around it's sampler+pads will do what you want no problem.

In regards to that comment, I beg to differ.. This Yamaha SHS-10 (yardsale $2) does what I want, but the keys are even more micro than the Korg. I'd really like to have some pads to do this with. If only this SHS had a MIDI IN as well.

My MV-8800 is just too big to do what I want, it's on eBay right now. And at the moment my whole setup is on battery power (SP-404, SP-555, MS-1, BR-800).

The Korg MS-1 is limited, I'm really waiting for the MicroSAMPLER XL (MS-2) [wink-wink, Korg, get your development on!]

Please see this video I recorded for you guys in an attempt to explain what I'd like and what currently works, allbeit basic and not ideal. (forget the part about the sustain)

Maybe I'm looking for a Casio/Yamaha keyboard with MIDI IN&OUT that supports Melody / Auto Bass Chord mode? I will try with my Yamaha DX-7 in Mono mode & see what happens as well.. Its just too damn big!

Again, thank you Clint and Metatron72 for your insight and assistance. ! This is more of a Korg fourms topic so I really appreciate the help!
(& Thanks, Mods for keeping this alive!)
