Akai MPK Mini problems - any help?

Hey all, hoping someone can give me a hand.

I bought an Akai MPK mini about six months ago to do some laptop production with. In September, I started having problems with it, but I've just started to try and fix it now (university got in the way).

Basically, the device worked brilliantly, until one day, when I plugged it in, it was no longer recognised and apparently the drivers are non existent. When I plug it in, I get this message:

"One of the USB devices on this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it". When I look into it further, it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems."

Any ideas? Cable isn't a problem - have tried it with several. I'm running it off the most recent Windows, with a view to use it in Ableton Live.

Unfortunately the mpk has a very flimsy solder connection to the main pcb. It can break very easily & This can and is the most likely cause of your problem.

Obviously check all software options first but I would suggest you check this out

Try reinstalling the drivers with the MPK Mini disconnected. Then reconnect after the installation. If that don't work and you're still under warranty, contact Akai.

Flimsy solder connection from the USB to main pcb (didn't actually name fault)

Hey Beatdiggerjazzcat!

My MPK Mini has a couple of broken pins inside the USB connector.

Do you mind shedding some light on the pinout for me so I can try to repair the pins or just replace the connector? I've looked high and low and can't find any schematic online.

It pin out if 5 contact pins left to right.

When it breaks it normally takes the tracks with it, making repair very tricky.

The boards are so cheap and flimsy that it's pretty much a no go

Hey everybody, first of all thanks for your time.

My problem is the following :

I (apparently) broke the USB plug of my Akai MPK mini, that is to say the plug snatched off from the electronic circuit. The problem is I bought my Akai product on the internet and I realized after the seller was not a registered Akai one, plus the guarantee is now outdated. I opened the mpk mini, tried just to put the plug back (without welding yet) on the place it was supposed to be, and plugged it to my computer which happened to trip and instantly go off. After I welded the plug back on the circuit, my macbook doesn't trip anymore but displays the following message : "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled". I can't seem to use my Akai MPK mini anymore.

What I tried :
- Look through the USB section of the System Profiler (it doesn't appear where it should)
- Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

I'm out of ideas, and I'm pretty sure the problem comes from the welding and not the computer but still... Can you give me some advices or diagnosis ?
