Setting up an MPD 18

I am having problems with Pad1 on this controller. When I use Kong, it plays pad 6. Pad 6 is working fine though. When I use NN-XT, Pad 1 doesn't do anything. I have gone through the manual for the MPD and followed all the basic setup information I can find. Any help would be appreciated. I just bought this thing yesterday. It is brand new.

You need whatever MIDI mapping you use on the MPD 18 to be in chromatic order starting at MIDI Note # 36 for Kong pad 1. (MIDI Note #'s 36-51 in order for Kong).

You'll probably need to use the Mapping Editor software to load a preset that has that not order or make your own and save it. The software should be on a disc, or -

You think the MPD18 'knows' that you are using KONG or NNXT, and automatically sets itself up correctly? Of course it doesn't, you have to go through the 'mapping' process so that pressing PAD1 on your MPD18 triggers PAD1 on KONG.

In a nutshell, they (MPD18 and KONG pads) have to be assigned to the same MIDI note numbers in order to work together properly.

The mpd18 editor is set up from 36-51 with pad 1 as 36 and I am still having these issues

It should work with stock preset number 1, that's what it says in Reason's Preferences/Control Surfaces when you add an MPD18 using Reason's built in remote support for it.

Is only the one pad working still? Or is it no MIDI communication?

If the controller is in a different USB port than when Reason saved it to your preferences you may have to manually make sure it's connected. Using an already listed entry for the MPD18, press Edit, and then Find, then press a pad on the MPD18. Or delete the listed entry and press Add/Akai/MPD18/Find..



If a controller isn't broadcasting/receiving MIDI properly Reason lists a red "X", when it is working it's a green check mark. If you have the check mark in Preferences/Control Surfaces and the right pad layout is loaded then I'm not sure what is wrong.

Was it bought new or used?

I actually set up my mpd like you said and like the manual and several other sources i found suggested before I made this thread, and was under the impression that this stock setting would infact work with reason, as you suggested. So, needless to say, i was a bit confused when i was told that this was all wrong in this thread.
It is a new controller. I plugged it in out of the box, went through pretty much the setup you described and all the pads worked perfectly in kong and nn-xt, except for pad 1. In kong it plays pad 6 and in nn-xt it doesn't play any sounds. Somehow it works fine with subtractor but I use another controller with that.

Most controllers have a MIDI map starting at note #36 standard. So when a post says the pads are out of order or some don't trigger, the possibility of a non chromatic mapping is the first guess usually. It did sound like you had done everything normally.

I have an MPD32 here and everything works normally. The only other guess I have is something with Reason's "Master Keyboard Input" selection in the preferences.

When one MIDI controller is selected as the Master Keyboard (listed in it's Preference's entry), and the "Master Keyboard Input" is set to "Separated" you will have the one set to Master 'get stuck' on one device.



Maybe why it's playing Subtractor and not the other devices. The only plays Pad 6 still makes no sense if the MIDI mapping is the stock Preset 1/Chromatic Notes #'s 36-51 on MIDI Channel 1A.
