Hello,

It's the STOP+REC/OVERDUB shortcut for those who don't know already :)

http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/os2xl/wait_for_key3.htm

With the current workflow it works at the current position in the sequencer.
I'd like to have an additional key combination that would bring back the cursor at the beginning. (for regular recording there's PLAYSTART)

I think it's boring to have to press SHIFT+PLAY START after having pressed STOP+ REC or OVERDUB. It would be nice to avoid an extra step.

I was thinking about another shortcut but it's hard to find something satisfactory.

Yes I'd find this very useful. I'm a big user of the 'wait for key' and as such I recently reported a bug - the unfortunate thing was it was less useful for me after reporting it than it was before! (JJ fixed the bug, but in a way that I wasn't expecting)
I posted a thread about it here:

Hi mikolo,

I didn't understand your topic at first but I think I got it now. You want to be able to hear the click at anytime right? (you were using the wait for key "bug" as a "workaround" for this purpose)

If you already sent it to Murai, did you get an answer? Maybe it's a bit difficult for him too.

The other day I resent the bank copy feature request with further explanations. I was told that JJ was busy with OS128XL one more time but I think there's an hope that he will add it one day.

Yeah that's right. It's actually worked that way since it was introduced- I thought the bug was that it didn't start immediately ( with count in off it would start a beat after pressing the buttons). I was really looking forward to the bug fix too.. And then I tried it. I must say JJ's fix is quite logical though.

Count in:off is really important for some simple macros I use to start recording mid-solo but the wait for metronome is essential for me to lay down the initial beat. I don't want to go back to 3.19 because pad pattern fx changes have been fixed in 3.20 but I might have too. The lesson here is be careful of the bugs you report! :-)

If I'm understanding correctly, you want the metronome to start immediately when you press [REC]+[STOP], but don't want to turn on the normal recording count-in?

If so, the most elegant solution I can think of right now is to add an item to the Count in option list so you may choose:

Count in: OFF, REC ONLY, REC+PLAY, WAIT

OFF is no count-in.
REC ONLY is count-in for [REC]+[PLAY] only.
REC+PLAY is count-in for [REC]+[PLAY] and [PLAY] only.
WAIT is count-in for [REC]+[STOP] only.

Back to the original request, [REC]+[STOP] then [SHIFT]+[PLAY START] on MPC1000 to go to START is more logical than [REC]+[STOP]+<. But if there was going to be a combination shortcut, [REC]+[STOP]+[START] has more meaning. On the MPC1000 the START label is on the [PLAY START] button, so [REC]+[STOP]+[PLAY START] would wait for key at the start. On the MPC2500 it'd be [REC]+[STOP]+[<<]

Yeah it makes more sense but if I'm not mistaken if you press PLAY or PLAY START it sends a MIDI message so that could be problematic.

In the actual state if you press STOP+REC/OVERDUB you can navigate with the <> keys so it's the second natural workflow. It could be a kind of super autobar feature. You keep the < key pressed and it goes back to the beginning. It could be used with the STOP and REC/OVERDUB keys at the same time or could be specific to the wait for key window.

But as it is, if you hold the [BAR] arrows they repeat. I actually use that as a fast-forward and rewind, because it's faster to hold down the [BAR] arrow than turning the [DATA] wheel. Then the [STEP] arrows or wheel are for finer movements. If it suddenly jumped back to the start after holding it down for a few seconds it would interfere with seeking through a long sequence.

Yes you're right but if you have 20 or 30 bars it's still slow with the current speed.

Indeed that's not easy to find something handy that would not create new problems, so statu quo is probably better :)

When I thought about that request I was trying to record a 1 minute long freestyle and I was frustrated because I couldn't retry very quickly. When it's repetitive, the STOP+REC and SHIFT+PLAYSTART double shortcut become boring. It would be nice to make it more efficient and ergonomic.

(In my case I'd even say that if there was a kind of UNDO function that would bring the MPC into the original wait for key state it would be the fastest way to do what I want. At least bringing the sequencer back to its original position after UNDO would make me happy.)

I've always thought one of the most important recording features is some button you can press while recording to say, "Ahh, that failed... Wipe what you recorded, go back where we started, and let's try it again."

On the MPC that should totally be the [UNDO] button. Recording an audio track? Hit [UNDO], it erases the take from RAM, goes back to the starting point, counts in if you have that set and records again. Recording MIDI? It removes any new events, starts again.
