Are you sure the zip drive works properly? Mine isn't that noisy. If something is shorting out inside the zip drive it could draw too much power from the MPC causing it to shut down.
When you spliced together the power cable, were you careful not to break any of the stranded wires -- if you break too many of them, it may not allow enough current to draw to the drive.
