MPC3000 - better OS version for 3.00

Can anyone provide me with a better OS file for the MPC3000 that can be booted on a 3.00 ROM version?

I'm waiting for my OS ROM chips to arrive but Akai told me it will be a while before they do.

So in the meantime I would like to use a better OS with my MPC3000.

I tried booting the 3.11 from floppy disk but that just gave an error.
Can anyone tell me what the latest version is that I can use to boot from floppy disk?

Is the error a type 11 ? Or one of the others ?

Are you saying that the version you have in ROM is V3.00

If so then that is the oldest version floating around out there for sure.

If you're running 3.08 or earlier in ROM, eg: 3.03 then you may have a problem.

Old versions (pre 3.10) had boot from floppy load problems in certain situations.

Many reports of 3.08 ( and 3.03 ) users being unable to boot a 3.11 floppy.

Try this ...

INIT ALL parameters on your MPC3000 and then boot the 3.11 SYS file from floppy.

Any joy now ?

If you still can't get your machine to boot from floppy then you'll just have to hold on tight until those 3.11 rom chips arrive.

It is indeed ROM version 3.00 that's installed in my MPC3000.

When I try to boot from floppy I get an error type 11.
I tried the INIT ALL parameters trick, but that didn't work.

So i guess I'll have to wait a few more weeks for the new chips to arrive


I was hoping that I could boot from an earlier OS version (<3.11). But apparently the problem lies in the ROM OS.

Yep ... problem indeed.

If your machine has V3.00 in ROM then it is possibly one of the first machines that was sent to Europe for review by a magazine.

I remember seeing a review machine back in 95/96 that had V3.00 roms.

Very early revision that was supposed to be updated.

Moving on...

If you dowloaded the EPROM images from the other group you're a member of then that tech your local AKAI agent put you in touch with may be able to sort out things quicker. IE, he/she could burn a set for you and you could cancel your order with AKAI ...

Just a thought.

I bought my MPC3000 sometime ago from the belgium band Praga Khan (aka Lords of Acid) http://www.pragakhan.com. It amazes me that they never upgraded it. But then again it was gathering dust in their studios for some years.

I did indeed download the EPROM images from the other forum.
I'll see if someone can burn them for a better price than Akai.

I'll have to wait a few more weeks since the tech at Akai Benelux is on holiday...

I must say that V3.00 is pretty buggy. In the last weeks I had the time to integrate the MPC3000 in my studio and in the last couple of days I'm using it intensely. Stuck Midi notes, Next/Previous sequence not always working, ZIP drive can only be found after going to the format menu...

Nonetheless the MPC3000 is fast becoming my studio center piece and replacing my Roland MC-50 and Akai S900.

PS: The not finding the drive until formatted issue is not a bug. The MPC3000 looks for file systems on drives that are compatible prior to allowing mounting of same.

It is indeed the one and only Praga Khan you mentioned.

Unfortunately they only gave me one disk with samples on them. I had hoped for more.

I think that the not finding the drive bug is of a different nature than you describe. My Zips are already formatted in the MPC3000 format.

Even when the ZIP drive is powered up first, with the ZIP in the drive, the MPC3000 can not find any scsi devices. I already tried different zip drives a Hard Disk and a MO-drive but that didn't make any difference.

In the DISK menu I don't have the 0. Select Disk option. But after having powered up the MPC3000 I select format SCSI drive, press next and only then is the ZIP drive recognized. I don't need to continue and format the drive. I can then go back to the DISK menu and select the extra menu item 0. Select Disk. Et voilà, the ZIP drive works.

But that will all be fixed with a newer OS version I guess.
