A Screw Loose (mpc 3000)

Bought an mpc 3000 a couple of months ago, and would like to replace the pads so bought new pads and pad corx.

Now, have opened up the mpc but the screws shown in the red squares here will not budge ! Not sure what the last owner did, but they will not come out.

In the picture below - these are the right screws to take out to get to the pads right ? Or am I going for the wrong screws ?

Yes, you will need to remove those to access the pads.

Have you tried a longer screwdriver? A longer screwdriver increases torque.

As a last resort, you can try heating the screws up -- it may loosen the threadlocker or whatever else is in there.

Yep I've tried a few different screwdrivers, including some long ones. No luck - its crazy, its like all the screws in there have locked up.

Worst comes to the worst I'll try one of those screw extractors, or check out an electrical repair shop thats not too far.

I dont know if it will work, but maybe a drop of wd-40 or something might lube the screw up a bit if it is caught somewhere. I dont know if that would do any harm though but it might be worth looking into to see if it is an option.

actually a longer screwdriver decreases torque since it flexes. If you could get a stubby and make sure the tip is the correct size you should be able to get them out.

use a vice grips. not a needle nose one. since the screws are brass or whatever, they bend easily, so you can pretty much clamp on those suckers with a vice... might take you one or two grabs to flatten out the sides enough so it catches.

I have seen jammed screws in new and old machines alike.

AKAI in some manufacturing runs filled the holes with a Lotite of some sort.

In other cases ?

Screw bind as a result of the good old redox reaction...

Apart from cost I am still puzzled why AKAI didn't use SS type screws.

Extraction ?

The screw from memory is a PZ1 not PH1 so be certain that you are using a correct screw driver to perform extraction.

Screw head damage evident ?

My method of screw removal in this regard is to use a micro file to cut a slot in the screw head so it will accept a flat head screw driver.

Then slowly force the screw out.

Take care with using screw extractors. ( broken screw head / screw shaft stuck in chassis )

"Screw Extractors" would be preferable to "EZOuts"

Thanks Grublet and Rohan, I'll give this a try. Looks to be quite a bit of damage to one of the screw heads.

dont worry about damaging them, they shouldnt be to hard to find at a radio shack.
