How do you trigger sounds from an external midi device?

How do you trigger sounds from an external midi device without the sounds from the MPC3000 playing at the same time? I want to record the samples from the MPC3000 on one track, and trigger the sounds from my Alesis DM5 on another.

First, you read the manual, easily downloadable from akai or forat.

If you are using a midi controller with the mpc, set the track from drum to midi, and set the midi channel, if you are trying to use the 3000 pads to trigger, you set the midi channel, leave the track set to drum, then go to the midi page, press 2, and set local mode to off. After you are done recording the track, set it to midi and turn local mode back on to use the mpc sounds from the pads again.

That's what I thought. Just wasn't sure if the drum to midi was working properly. Haven't used the ole MPC3000 in a while. Thanks Elmacaco
