External floppy drive

Found a bunch off floppy beats. Now with my card reader inside I can't load those floppy's anymore. I know I can get a USB Floppy drive and transfer all the data.

But,

(Now I know this works caus I used to own one of these with an old HD installed)
And put the original 3000 floppy drive in there with some power and IDE converters would that work?

So you want to make an external SCSI floppy drive using a SCSI to IDE bridge?

So much hassle for so little gain, why not just get a USB floppy drive to transfer all the floppy beats to a CF card and be done with it. If you got a card reader, may as well use it for it's intended purpose.

Another reason why I decided to keep my internal floppy drive and go external with the card reader, it's a more flexible option. Plus you only need one external card reader between several MPC's and whatever other SCSI gear you have.

One option for you is to stick your CF card reader in that external SCSI case, and put the original floppy drive back in the machine...

I like hassle. I know I can transfer all my old floppy's to a CF card. Less fun.

Ok, If anyone is interested. I decided to do a little project. Took a full day.

Semi Hot-swappable internal drive.

I opened her up once again.

Removed/desoldered the connector:


Soldered the new ''plug & play'' connector that I stole from an old PC floppydrive:


Made my own cable:


Put her back together. All works.

Working CF reader:

I think I'm quite happy the way this has turned out, finally.

What do you mean by 'semi-hotswappable'?

I had my CF reader installed and I also wanted to be able to get the Floppy back in without to much hassle.

The Microtech CF reader takes a 4 pin molex power cable. Normally you had to cut the 3000's stock cable/remove the mini molex (berg) to fit a 4 pin molex. Or you could get one of these. http://tinyurl.com/8v8clds Unfortunatelly I did not, nor did I know of its existence, and had my wire cut.

So bassically what I did. I replaced the stock connector on the board with a Male 4 pin (See pic) wich makes it easy to use any cable I want in the future. And, I made my own cable wich has the standard 4 pin mini molex (berg) to fit the floppydrive and the 4 pin molex to fit the CF reader (See the pic)

The 'Semi hot-swappable' really isn't a term. I just made that up. All the wiring is there to either fit the floppydrive or the cf reader. So that makes it a quick swap.

Does that make any sense?

It's a lot of work for nothing really, but it was fun.
