@simon
Honestly I feel like we are black & whiting our responses, to something I find myself agreeing with you more on now that I understand your position better. All I will say in response to your post is that if someone decides to use an older chemical formula of 35mm instead of a more recent iteration, or crappier method of telecine etc... Because it enhances what they feel their style as an artist is, rather than doing it simply to dirty up the film to play into a rediculious genre stereotype then they think should they should follow. But I feel that's something we agree on. ...
In other words, you and I don't support someone going out and buying an mpc3000 simply because the machine has a cult following in a certain genre. But rather to make an
educated descision based off their wants and desires as an artist, and if that leads them to buying an mpc3000 then great! To put it simply I think we can both agree that if your going to make technical descisions like what generation ADC to use, or bit rate, sample rate etc.. You should actually know why your making those decisions!
Just trying to find some common and ground and wrap this up. We probably should have just PM'd a while ago...
My bad on not being clear from the get go that was talking about overdriving the analog ins, I just considered the inherent unique qualities and abilities from the get go. I agree, if your just making things 16bit 44.1hz your just gonna slightly color the sound from the analog preamps and anti alaising filter. Which wouldn't warrant going through the ADC from a DAW if you had SPDIF...
If you want to keep chatting PM me, i could chat about the qualities & specifics of ADC/DAC etc.. For days!

If not, no worries.
