echo send and mix board

I'm kinda new to the producing game. I have a mpc 60 which I picked up a few months ago and I have a few questions.

1) what is the echo send for? For an outboard effects unit ? Can I use it to integrate something like a filter module into my setup? It just says how to use the echo send in the manual not what it's for.

2) I've heard that having a mix board is important. How would I integrate this into a turntables+mixer, mpc, and computer daw setup.

1. Yeah you can use it for a filter. That's what I do. Echo out to my MFC42/Outs of the MFC to echo return.

2. I'm sure you can already mix in your daw right?

Hey can you apply the send/return to any outputs you want or is it applied as a blanket over all the sounds?

The echo comes out the main outs, if you use the individual outs for all your sounds, then the mains become an effect output that you can mix back in with the pads. The individual out mexer levels control how much of that pad goes out the echo send, so you can effect all pads, one pad, or different pads at different volumes. It works really well with reverbs, which is what I think it was intended for.

Any ideas on how to connect all this? Today i purchased a Boss RE-20 delay unit and want to use it with my MPC 60 and DJ mixer (has 4 line ins). Im using one of the individual outs on the MPC and assigned certain pads to the Boss - works fine. But - the echo send mixer doesnt seem to control the amount of echo/reverb. Im trying to get different pads (the ones assigned to the individual out to the Boss) to have various amounts of delay/reverb - but the mixer wont change this. Would love someone to tell me what goes into what! much appreciated...anyone?!
