this might be helpful to someone, I have an mpc 60 II that had a worn out encoder. I tried one of these: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&x=0&y=0

It's not a perfect match, but it works. the old encoder pins are marked. Looking at the back of the encoder, the wire going to pin 3 on the old encoder goes to the center pin on this one. old pin 1 goes to new pin one, old pin 2 goes to new pin 3. The 2 extra pins on the opposite side are for a built in push switch so they're left unconnected.

The main problem is the shaft isn't long enough - pressing the knob on makes it farther down in the case than the old one. I took my knob apart and put some sculpmetal moldable epoxy between the 2 parts so the knob sits up at the right height - works perfectly now. It's a little less clicky than the old one.

Thanks Fengland!

I Just got my encoder in the mail, took the old one out, soldered the new pins to the wire following your pattern and it works flawless! This was a very inexpensive solution!

This is great info!

I wonder if this will work for the MPC3000. :hmmm:

Thanks so much, Richie!
The link seems to work again now, too.
I ordered 3 encoders of similar spec locally because I’m impatient and postage from the USA can take a while.
2 are ALPS and one is Bourns.
I’ll report if any of those work because they’re also cheap and readily available. I’m not holding my breath but the specs are so similar, I’m optimistic.

I’ve disassembled and cleaned the original encoder twice now, still no luck, it only increments no matter which way I turn it.

I can confirm that this encoder by ALPS also works:

https://ie.rs-online.com/web/p/mechanic ... s/2651739/

ALPS Part number: EC16B242040R

Please excuse my horrible soldering job, my eyesight has gone bad for close-up work and the space was very tight with the length of cable available. Joints are fine and if it stops working I'll go back and tidy up.

As you can see, there's a nipple on the new encoder that fits perfectly into the mount for the old encoder.
I can't be sure my old encoder had not been rewired, so I'm not going to say "old pin 1 to new pin 1 etc".

Wiring is as follows, L to R from above,

1. VVVVVVVVV marked wire
2. Blue striped wire
3. Manufacturer's name wire

The shaft is d-shaped, unfortunately.

I just happened to have a spare D shaft knob with a skirt that had the exact diameter of the original aluminium MPC60 encoder knob, so I cut the height to fit and glued it into the original using Evo Impact adhesive.
The knob is a Buchla 200 series knob, readily available online should you wish to do the same.
