Difficulties compressing kick drums.....

There they have a plugin called Dominion for free ...
I use this on nearly every kick i sample....
Then check for PSP Vintage Warmer plugin .... some presets are a litlle exagerated I think but i like the Pressure preset of it especially in combination with dominion. After applying both ur kick should sound way fatter all u will have to do is to reduce the gained lowend a little.

I think you should try layering your kicks, then compress, followed by eq for real punchy kicks with good bottom end, instead of compressing say just one kick drum.

Depending on the settings, compressing a single kick drum will remove a lot of the lowest frequency information first, as this has the most energy and will trigger the compressor to fire first giving the perceived effect of removing some of the bottom end, and making the higher end frequencies of the kick drum seem louder and punchier.
