Talked to Bruce from FORAT - who says hello to everyone by the way.....and he had my MPC-60 apart on his desk and was going through the various things that I might want to have done:

1.Having the blacklight replaced....mine was lights out entirely. So i'm having that replaced with a White light. Nice!

2. Output Boost modification.....he told me that from all of those who have had this procedure done they claim it to have sounded louder than a 3000 output. Bruce says it's an amazing upgrade and well worth it because of how low the output is on the 60 from the get. He said the drums coming out of a modded 60 sound incredibly warm and impactful!

3. This is the b!tch part. I was not aware of this until he told me that this whole entire time I had the memory expanded on my 60 but one of the chip connectors was faulty and so he ran a test and replaced the expansion with one of his and told me he could fix it for 60.00 and so I went ahead and had that done as well.....so now i'm gonna have 26 seconds of sample time......kinda funny.....I wasn't really concerned with it before but now i'm excited as hell.....ahhhh whatever! hahaha

Lastly. Bruce is a great guy and we had a great conversation. He explained to me that him and Roger Linn used to work closely together and that they are both musicians. The reason they made all these fantastic sampling drum machines is because they themselves were actually using this gear first hand and they developed certain features on the 60 based on their needs. It's amazing because you always think that it's just some computer geek type engineer developing this stuff but it really is from the artists themselves. So yeah I told Bruce Forat himself that he's a legend and that we all love what he has done for the 60's and the 3000's and the sp1200s.

For those of you that own a 1200 he said he can do a modification taht allows you to monitor your sounds coming into the 1200 before sampling.....which I think is amazing!

My 60 will be back from sunny CA in about a week.....i'll get a beat up online first thing with the new mods and we'll see if we can't tell the difference.....I sure hope so!!! PEACE YALL.

Gotta love that, Bruse not only does the mod you want. but checks your 60 for other problems, checked to see if the memory was working, etc.

You may also want him to replace the small bettery in there with a battery holder and non soldered battery. Even if your battery is good, when it fails (and it will eventually) it won;t remember your settings and you'll have to save par files to get your midi mappeing and all that. I did my own but it was a major pain and very scary. While It's there I would get that done so in the future all you gotta do is swap the battery out of the holder and not mess with desoldering a battery that can explode from the heat. Once he replaces the battery it won't go bad for another 10-15 years, and when it does you just pop it out from the holder and put a new one in nfrom radio shack.

Seriously, it might be another $30-$60 bucks, but it will save you grief in the future man, seriously. When the battery dies it becomes a real pain, and while it's there, you might as well trick that thing out. Few people know about the battery thing to think about preventative measures like that man. Seriously, do it, if you don;t and the battery fails you'll seriously kick yourself.

Yo, Congrats on the memory, I didn't remember you were at 13.1 seconds. That's so ill that you had that shyt right in there and he's fixing it!! Woo Hoo!! Wait, is he keeping yours and giving you a new one or fixing yours to put back in? Man, Bruce is the man.

Now THAT is honesty ...

A lesser human could have charged like a wounded bull here to fix some thing that wasn't all that broken, but Bruce did the right thing.

yeah thanks. Awee man I hope it's not too much of an inconvenience for him to reopen the machine as he had handled the necessary upgrades Friday evening...but i'll talk to him Monday.

The Answer is YES!! He can boost the outs on the MPC 3k, ASR 10 Akai s950

I monitor through the desk when sampling on the 1200 or the MPC. But can he do a mod that replaces the 1200's pads with something decent? Another cool mod for the 1200 would be having on/off on switches for the filters , as opposed to having to plug the cables in half way. You could probably do that yourself with a drill and a soldering iron, or make a small external switch box because God will probably strike you with a bolt of lightning if you drill your SP...

Actually the shit doesnt work different than an insert cable.

tip = unfiltered
ring = filteredered

So instead of having 8 you just have 16 outs, not sure if you can use em both at the same time though (don't have a sp )

Correct me if I'm wrong but I guess a batch of insert cables would do the job.

you could very easily make a box with 8 switches to plug stereo cables into if that's the case, or just use stereo channels and pan hard left or right when you want filtered or unfiltered.

I sold my modded SP-12 last year. It had a toggle switch installed above the mix output. When you switched it on, the filters were bypassed without loss in volume, when switched off, the outputs functioned as normal. I aquired it from Paul Chambers cousin. It came with the manual still in it's original shrink wrap.
