mpc 60 standalone or gotta have a rack too..

im gettin an mpc again thats all there is to it..im thinkin its gonna be a 60. will the 60 need a little help from a rack? get the drums done w/ the 60 and sequence the rest from the 60 on the rack sampler i.e. akai s 5000/6000??

or just rock out w/ the 60 and fuc!< the dumb ish??

you can do the 60 all alone or with a rack depend on how complex your music will be. if you on some straight choppin up loops and whatever then go for expanded memory and a 60 all by its lonesome. if you on that samplin' long loops and layering and such then check for a companion.

thanks for the quick reply, imma be just choppin loops. no layering of loops...im coming from a full blown 2kxl so i learned how to make those shoddy effects sound nice...imma miss em im afraid..the warmth of the 60 should be more thn enough 'effect' for my sounds though..the effect i will miss though is the delay-chorus, you gotta tweak it to make it sound right but once you do and you apply it to some hornso or strings it can be a little bit lovely..im trying to understand elm's tips on chopping on the 60 but w/o having ever used one (YET) its all a bit lost on me still...chopping on the 2kxl is a breeze....live to chop...

man kill that noise....i make my own delay on the 60 using the poly assignment and the 16 level velocity settings. I can create delay for almost any part. I'd say you'd need to purchase an effects (FX) rack and use the AUX through on the mpc-60 to add reverb to drums......you won't find any bells and whistles inside the 60.....just a hard rugged sampling hamster that uses an old Sony walkman to magnetize wave forms from the air to tape.

oh and as for the chopping thing i've become a master at it - I sample one section and save it to disk and then chop and load and rename as necessary. It organizes my sounds and seems to work extremely well. the X factor works well also if you'r einto that sorta thing.....but I like to load the same sample until i'm out of memory........sucks with only a max of 26 seconds....us poor babies.

I would say get a rack once you get good on the 60, more important than that is the OS, seriously. But you know S950's are going so cheap, that after you use the 60 for a while you'll know what features you want.

could you elaborate more on the decay using the poly assignment & the 16 levels? is it similar to chopping samples using Velocity on the 2000xl?

basically i'll set my sample to poly instead of mono and i'll tap the pad to the correct timing or tempo and emulate an echo effect. The dope thing about poly is that the mpc-60 somehow manages to store the sample in RAM and play it back overlapping itself nearly infinitely so like you can get the samples to sound as if they're decaying into sound space.....of course you would reduce each notes velocity in a gradual fashion.

It works quite well actually.

In my soundclick, I did the "ghetto manual do it yourself echo" on both the French Twist track, and the Martyr track. Martyr has been taken down, it was sold.

Using 16 levels on velocity is how some folks do it so they can hit different pads for lower volumes, but I always just play the pad.

i like to to do it w/ a reverse effect..gaining in volume as it echoes at the end of a chorus/begining of a verse..

I know this is nothing new in fact I do the same thing but I keep the poly assignment on MONO

are you guys familar with taking like a 5 sec sample and going in the prgm and adjust the Velocity Mod sft st to about 3000 or higher. leave the attack on 0 and set the volume field to about 40. the volume field will basically control your sample start time.. Put the sample in 16 levels - Velocity and go from
1-16 on the pads. The results are like chopping the loop. remember keep playing with the volume field to change the start time. This shit is crazy, but the results vary depending on the sample.

This feature is what I foolishly though DRUMATIC was referring to. I just stumbled on this feature in the 2000xl. So Im still learning how to freak it on the 60. Try it you might like it....

but that is really hot, I love that feature, and every MPC has it IIRC.
