Incase some of you are still out there sleeping on one of the finest publications dedicated to wax and music (Wax Poetics), I thought i'd bring this to your attention. (The full article can be found in this months issue featuring Blowfly etc.)
So i'm browsing the articles, and I stumble across a Steve Gadd interview. Of course being a drum head, I'm all enthusastic to read what lyes within the text. So I start reading right, and I come across something totally unexpected . He puts Linn out on front street by saying that he BOOSTED all the Linn drum sounds from him! Apparently, Steve is well known for some very odd tunings on his drums. In fact so unique that, it's hard to miss his drum sounds (for those who really know drum sounds well). So he goes on to say that he was listening to a Linn drum machine one day in a studio session, and realized the drums coming out the machine were his.. problem was, they were drums off a session a couple yrs prior that never made daylight, and he hadn't given anyone permission to use that tape. So, being mad at drum machines for putting him and other session drummers out of work, and the fact that someone was making good money off his drums sounds, pissed him off. So he called Linn and said, "Hey man, your using my drums. I know because I can tell by my odd tuning." So he tells Linn to pay him, and of course, Linn denys everything. 15-20 yrs later, Steve is at Forats studio in LA and tells Forat, "Hey man, you guys used my drums on those first drum machines you guys did..", and Forat replies, "I know.". Forats acknowledgement all these years later confirmed what Steve had susepcted all along.
Pretty interesting stuff. I suggest you guys run out and pick up a copy and read for yourself. Not suprising why the Linn 9000 was the illest drum machine of it's time (and still stacks up today), and why Babyface and so many other musicians used those drum sounds. Cause they contained the spirit of Steve Gadd! One of the many stories he tells about getting dicked.
