oh not that. i mean this works out in the main screen. Like hold down record and then hit a pad. It will move an 1/8th note and record that pad press. That auto forward scrolling u still need to input the note via step edit. I know the 1k doesnt have it so i think its just on the 2kxl. Dont know bout the older models. kinda like a note punch in.

That's kinda dope. Right on the main screen. Ill.

Drumat!c, I hear what you are saying, it for real sounds like some hardcore math to me, I haven't really thought out beats on grid before making them since the 808 only days, and even then it was still kind of real time. It's intriguing to me, I'd love to hear more about it since it is so different than the way I work.

props man.

for the swing i use whatever goes with the beat/samples but when i want that shaker/hi-hat sound thats really tight together, like a shaker going down, then coming back up - i put the shaker sound wherever i want the hit to be, duplicate that track so it will cut itself out, then use the shift note function to make it late to get that sound like its coming back up, also try adjusting the attack of the second sample so it just sounds like its coming back up without a powerful hit

i hope that makes some sence

Just chiming in on the step edit vs. real time convo... personally, I use both. 4 the parts that I want 2 have that tight timing like kiccs and snares then I'll use step edit. 4 everything else I program in real time with no quantize. I used 2 only program in real time with the quantize off. I stumbled on this method when I was working with a sample and I couldn't get the drums 2 fall how I wanted. Once I had the my kicc and snare in place it was easy. I ended up scrapping the beat but began incorporating step edit in2 my sequences.

I never played drums but I've been playing drum machines since I was 8 or 9 years old. It's a different skill and the rhythm and sense of style that u develop is enhanced by using all the various aspects of the sequencer. 4 lacc of a better analogy... u can't play rhythm guitar all the time u gotta play lead sometimes 2.

The method I use 2 make them crunk hi hats that move real fast is 2 slow the BPM way down so u can get them 32nds. Program the hats in real time like Timbo making a slow jam 4 Ginuwine. Then bring the beat bacc 2 it's original tempo and it'll sound like your favorite dirty south producer. -uno-

thanks the for tips, all. i made a tight beat last night using 32nd's @ 82 BPM. thing is, i hadn't planned on making it that way since i usually use 1/8th hi-hats with variations in swing and so that setting is usually the default when i power up the MP.

but last night my quantize was set at 32nd's when i started programming the hi-hat to this loop and it just all came together. i was like yes i finally got it! and it was all a mistake!

unfortunately, my home PC crashed and i have no way of recording it for you all to listen to. i'll post it up someday, though.

thanks again!

Try doing 4 1/8 bars @ 160-180 tempo with absolutely no swing. Once you have the ongoing hats occasionally fill in a hat or two at 1/16. This is my take on this

peace.

imo....I think that way is much easier...you keep everything on one sequence...I know on the 60 it has edit loop, so you can do all kinds of crazy shit with it....I forgot if the 60 has a "locate" option but Pen and pad aren't just for writing lyrics...They can be used to write down notes too....Chaining up lots of different sequences can be a pain for me....

Word up boogie I work the same way, with a notebook next to the mp. Ive tried making songs with lots of different seqs but I work best with just one linear seq.

drumat!c wrote:yeah....i don't particularly understand that whole re-do thing.....i just program my **** the way i wanna hear it....i'm always expanding on solid 2 bar beat segments. I'll knock out 16 sequence variations of a drum pattern in far less time than someone that is programming in real time....also....you can't possibly real time the kinda patterns i sequence unless you're playing on a midi drum set. That is just me though....

So what do you do? Record the beat quantized and then go into step edit and **** around with it? I should probably try some new things with my drums. I make a 2 or 4, sometimes 8 bar sequence and then have that go throughout the whole track.
