I agree with 3001, the 60 isn;t the best at lo fi, the sp-1200 is probably the best sounding, the forat is 8 bit, so it's in a class by itself, and the 440 is 12 bit IIRC, and does sound damn good.

The thing about the 60 is it isn't just lo fi, you can get really nice clean sounding ssamples, or get them dirty and lo fi sounding, where as with the others you basically have less control over that. its the 40k ssampling rate that helps the 60 be able to sound clean if you want that, the bits only control level, which is why you get that punch. But what the 60 gives you that is great is that level of control when you sample to get things sounding how you want them to sound, lo fi, hi fi, all in how you sample with the machine. It comes with time, and the sequencer and midi options of the 60, and the 3.10 OS especially put it in a class by itself compared to the others. How many 12 bit samplers have an OS completed in 1997?

also this, the sp1200 is really 16 bit innit? it's stored in 16 bit? but then demuxed into 12 bit or some weird thing? just like how the forat's really 12 bit but the ndemuxed to 8 bit? i always got a bit confsuedby this aspect...


with that sp1200, mpc test befrore. u should've left everything uneffected. effects will often change how the sound is viewed. those sounds are basically lofi sounds so of course they're not going to change. there aren't too many high frequencies in them. the kick will remain about the same(well until u use tuning... ). there's not much else to capture there...

when checking it out i did figure out the first was the sp1200, u can hear by the hi hats, they fizzle a little bit.

i dunno it's liek VA. you can make passable differences, butit's all in working with the instrument day to day. and getting used to it. enjoying it. you're going to tell the difference ez when u work with it.

El, how do you mean, sample things differently to get them sounding lo/hi fi?

watcha mean ? about the freq content?

if you're sampling something within the freq range of 80hz->5khz, it's not gunna sound so much different on 12 bit than 16 bit...

Thank you! its not just the sound but how the machine feels as you get the sound, if you re fighting to get the sound you want then the machine is lacking. if you have fun with the machine and it gives you the sound you want, then it's gravy. I love the analog interface and sound so much and emulations always seem bizarre and don't give the same directness.

anon, the 60 is very flexible, the more you sample stuff, the more you'll discover the diversity of the 60 sound.

the mpc60 is a **** wonderful machine, wonderfuly flexible. i dare say it's the best lofi drum machine for everything it has?:-) its better than the sp1200 cuz the sp1200 sequencer sux. better than the 440 cuz it crashes. forat9000 it might have a battle on, but those are a little too rare to properly compare:-) ooh i'm a poet and id on't even know it

imho tho the mpc60 has the best balance of everything. and what a lovely sequencer that is...but if u got a sequencer u really like there's much better things for sound...

just trying to save ya some $, but u might end up lovin the 60 and sell the 2kxl and buy a hi fi sampler to replace that!:-) that might be a better idea
