Yes a soldering iron can damage componants, but worse than that is static electricity.

the risk factor MPC3000 talks about is too true, it's why I don;t like to work on other people's gear that much unless I am very sure I can handle it. I go commando on my shyt.

but if you're cheap and good with a soldering iron, get that memory upgrade, but if you get weird problems it'll be harder to test if it's the memory than with the plug in board. I would go for a perfboard plug in board sooner than doing the direct to chip steez.

I feel you on resale price stuff too, but the 60 can drop as well, but certainly not as fast as new products since the people who always sweat the new stuff only hang around as long as it's new.

Having full memory will push the resale value up, but not by much. I know I love the 60 so I keep it running as best as I can. I know it better than any other machine here except the one's I built, and it has completely revolutionized the way I make music since the day I got it.

$100 to double your memory? it's a no brainer.

Foreal man it would suck to have a ram chip go bad and have to unsolder that mess.

Previous owner of my mpc ripped out the floppy cable off the motherboard and i had to replace it with a connector. Damages probably been done, but if any, what can I expect? I think im going to follow 'if it aint broke dont fix it' from now on...

Heat is a **** on those DIPs, maybe you could instal a DIP carrier first as to not damage the chip? Similiar to the ones that hold OS.

Static electricity can be alvievated with a ground strap.

or

Plug the akai in(but not on) and hold on to the metal base to ground yourself.

Don't use magnetized tools either.

i've been learning a shit load in school lately. I just did my new backlight in 20 minutes(first time)
I've also rigged up a sine wav oscillator with a mono RCA output, I'm gonna replace that input with a 1/4"...you know what that means...time to sample my own basslines..oh jyeah...
