How do I sync to ....

Can anyone tell me how I can sync my MPC3000 to a Digital multitrack recorder (Roland VS2480) by just using the midi out ports or the smpte out of the MPC?

Can I use the above ports only?

Both midi ins are used for synth purposes and I don't have the SMPTE in board.

Sync is a topic which really confuses me because of the many types.
If no one can help, can someone maybe post a link to a website with info that could help. I can't find many.

Doesn't that Roland use Midi Time Code? If so, you can check the posts that talk about syncing the MPC to Pro Tools, or MPC and Midi Time Code. There are of course differences, but essentially the process is the same.

If you post your set up and how you have it connected, I may be able to give you a better solution to your wiring.

Without midi ins you can sync the MPC with SMPTE from the software, but I prefer Midi.

otherwise you could sync the MPC to the software, but I prefer the opposite.

I've thought about what's been said and I've decided to sync to the VS2480 by using MTC from the MPC out (c).

However, there aren't many options available from the MPC. For example, how do I set the offset? Or double check the frame rate to make sure it's the same as the multitracker?

I've linked it up, and it sends the messege to the recorder, but it's not in sync.

Can anyone suggest anything?

go to the tempo sync page and press the sync soft key. Frame rates are there.

I noticed the settings your refering to, but aren't they the settings for the MTC midi in? I'm sending MTC from the midi out so shouldn't there be a seperate setting?

nope, the settings are for in and out.

Use Midi clock first, then get fancy.
