Distortion?

my MP is putting out distorted sound and im pretty sure its the right jack doing it. I thought it was just a cord problem but when i switched cords (switched left for right, and vice versa) it gave the same distortion. When i take out the right cord and just leave in the left the sound is fine but when i take out the left and leave the right the sound gets distorted. when i hit the pads lightly the sound comes out accompanied by light distortion but if i hit it fully the sound comes out louder but also with louder distortion. I don't think the distortion is a volume problem either as it sounds more like static (think FM/AM radio static) then speakers about to be blown.

Anybody have any ideas?

the cords/plugs are new.

i dont think the speakers im using are the problem either as i also use them for my computer and the sound comes out fine.

It sounds like the speakers to me but if you have checked them then it can't be. Do you have any mains cables running alongside your audio cable because they can pick up noise and hum? DO you generally run your speakers loud? Also what ones are they, some are more prone to problems than others unfortunately...

it's a solid box and has never had audio problems since my dad got it in the 80's. For lack of funds i'm using the headphones that came with my ipod on my MP due to the static. Now, just before i read your post the static started creeping through in the headphones. the headphones have never given static till just now so i know its not them. i'm pretty sure its the MP. its a creeping static too, btw. it starts off low and then slowly gets louder
