MPC3000 + something to record into

Hi everyone,

Basically I use the mpc3k as a sequencer to run my moog phatty, so what I want to do now is have the mpc running the midi sequence and then record the audio from the phatty to the mpc. I read through the forum and found out that it is not possible (unless Rohan does some more magic with an upcoming OS release).

I know I can record the audio into my computer, but I dont like the sound as much, so then I read about getting another samplers (S1000 is on sale in my area for $200 cdn). What I wanted to know is, what would you guys suggest in a situation like this?

Wouldn't it be a better solution to use a computer-based sequencer like Sonar to record your digital audio? Samplers aren't really meant to record entire tracks of audio - they don't have the memory and it's a pain to edit. Sonar (or Cubase or whatever) is made for those kinds of tasks. You could easily synch it to your MPC3000 to let the MPC sequencer drive things, if you prefer to create your sequences on the 3000.

This seems like an unnecessary step. Im with SCSI on that one. If you dont like the sound of your Phatty going int to the computer, you probably need to either:

1. Review the gain staging before recording the Moog. (If not sure google it)
2. Reconsider the signal chain going into your converters. (If you have outboard compressors, preamps, eq, etc)
3. Consider recording to a different app. Some say they hear a difference.
3. Upgrade converters. (only spend more money after you have exhauseted any other possibilites)

I havent looked at the tech specs, but its hard to believe that the Lil Phatty will sound better sampled into the 3k first then sent to the very same converters. My guess is that you are doing something wrong with levels/gain staging. You never know though. Shame on Moog if so... lol

No probs. We are all sleazy with the gear...but every problem doesnt require you to throw money at it. Id try Sonar, Nuendo, or Samplitude on some test drive steez. I have heard some innernetz people claim those sound better than PT.

Consider this though... if you have a Tube EQ laying around of decent quality.. TRY it! If you have a regular ole paramentric eq TRY IT! If you have an preamps with a DI (Direct Input) jack. TRY IT! Try running the output of the synth through a guitar pedal, if thats all youve got. Depending on the synth sound, you may suprise yourself.

Who knows what will work best for warming up the phatty. Actually, you may wanna goto some boards with other phatty users see what their technique is for recording. Might find out what you need is cheap or free.

And yes...im offically jelly that you have a Lil Phatty.. I want one!!!!!

The SP-303 is a nice and handy friend when it comes to shit like that, play your sequence on the 3000, hit record on the sp-303 and play your funky synth solo, all very accessible right away and you get some spaced out effects on top of that if you wish man i think just realized i miss mine.
