New 60 user and a couple of questions :)

I was messing a bit with my new 60 yesterday and a couple of questions popped up that i could not find in the manual

Is there a way to check the memory status of the machine ? So far i have only found it when i want to to load a new disc...

I case i want to install an internal Zip/card reader, where could i find a scsi adaptor ?
(the marion interface uses a small scsi cable that i have not seen before)

Where is the memory battery located ?

1. When you go to DISK--load you should see 1500 free. Or when you go SAMPLE new sound, when you turn the jog wheel on the time spot up left, it should go 26.1 secs. If you see these two you have full memory upgraded. Also, you can check if you have the getto mod if you open up your MP. You should see a nice EPROM board on the left corner. If you see a messy board, you have the getto mod.

2. Ask Marion Systems for the cable specs. They are the manufacturers of the SCSI upgrade.

3. What do you need the memory battery for? It's dead?

yeah i do need to replace the battery, thats one of the reasons why i got my 60 for such a good price.

You sure about the battery? What problems is it causing?

according to the previous owner the mpc looses its settings when you switch it off. that would be a good sign that the battery is dead. i have just been messing with for one or two hours but it doesnt keep the settings.

None of the MPC's keep the settings when shut down.

You got to save PROGRAM (.PGM file) and ALL SEQUENCES AND SONGS (.ALL file). In the .PGM file all your settings on your samples are saved and in the .ALL file all your sequences and edits, time settings, bpm etc. are saved.

All MPC's feature a non-volatile memory where some parameters are saved. These files can be recalled if you save and load a .PAR file. However, by saying parameters I don't mean sample settings but just system parameters such as midi routing etc. For example, if you change the MIDI Note number on each pad and map them in your own way, these settings will be automatically saved as a .par file.

If there is a battery in there and it is dead, then your MPC will lose your midi settings next time you turn it on. Do this simple test to check if you actually have such a problem:

-go to the SOUND screen, then ASSIGN SOUNDS (option 1) and see what MIDI Note is indicated when you press the first PAD down left on the first BANK (A). You should normally see the 37 saying.

-Now, if I am not mistaken, go to the MIDI screen and option 1, then press again the same pad and in the area where it says 37 again, scroll with the jog wheel and change it to 35 (check with the manual for that as I don't have my MP in front of me right now and can't recall exactly how to re-map the midi notes).

-Restart the MP and go again in the SOUNDS screen. If you press the same PAD on the same BANK, it should now say 35.

I'll check that later and see if the steps are correct. If someone else actually remembers the steps, please feel free to correct me.

I just tried it, assigned pad from 37 to 35, then switched it off and its back at 37


no sweat though, i am getting a battery in the mail. since the guy from midi-rakete.de lives close to me i might ask him to replace it. he will also do my inverter which makes a funny noise

Hmm, I am not sure about the test but anyway, since you're fixing it, it's good.

How much did he asked you about the inverter replacement? I need to fix mine also, it's driving me mad!

he is asking for 20 euros for the inverter. to install it its about an hour of work which is 35 euros. quite fair i think, i could do it myself but i dont wanna mess it up.
i already messed up my emax trying to replace the backlight

I put the inverter from midi- rakete , no more high pitched noised ! 15 euros is a good price ( i did it myself because i'm in France ) , and Wolfgang is really an helpful guy ( the inverter is not an akai part so it's not plug and play ) .

The guy over at midi-rakete is simply great. I don't intent to advertise his business, but he's damn good at what he offers.
