Details are needed. Do you want crunchy, are you talking about EQ or more distorted sounds?

okay, well I make hiphop... so if you know jaydee and hi-tek stuff, thats what Im searching for...

Depends on what you want to achieve and what samples are being used, but I often use compression on snares and bassdrums. Play around a bit with the EQ settings as well, might be good in some cases.

using "double" layers of samples for a certain type of sound, for instance the snare, can sound quite fat sometimes if them samples complement each other. A boring, dull snare sample but with a clear 'edge' at its beginning on top of another, dirtier snare can be nice sometimes. Experiment!

as pUs said... key to get the punchy drums is to layer the sounds. if ur into choppin up drumbreaks layer the kick with a very thumpy one... euh... let's say 'shack up' by banbarra for instance... wich is pretty much the standard Premier kick... or a kick from a mid-skool era hip hop record 86-88... like hi tek does (did) all the time... or a good low end kick for some subtle sub bass... j.dilla style. same with the snares... put another snare, clap, snap, click whatever on top. the kick or snare from the break is there to serve the character while the layered ons are simply there to provide that 'oomph' feelin. play around a lot with ur adsr envelope... decay does miracles. eq the sounds before and after you sample - compression obviously...

anyway... wahey... my first post here... been makin beats for a few years and i just got a mpc3000... yesterday. hope to learn fom you heads and maybe give a little info in return where i can.

whatever the case...

keep puttin soul music up!

Yeah. Double up.
Also some compression really goes a long way.
Eq too. Hardware or software.
For me, software is easier and cheaper.

It's like food....flavor to your taste.
Those tools and others are your spices.

DOPE replies, thanx!

Okay, I dont use a compressor. I record all my beats in loose waves in Cool edit. I do mix 'em first. Any tips on what i could use in my PC for compression, has Cubase sx got sum good stuff??

I do layer my drums... But tell me more about decay, because I dont see the advantage in that. Can you tell me how I should use it? for which drum and so on...

PEACE!

Visit www.kvr-vst.com
Three freebies that I like are...

H20
Fish Filets
Cyanide

Take a look at the MDA VST freebies too.

the decay gives it good punch. Try it for a while.

decay is like a sort of ' attack ' function, isnt it?

Do you use it on both drums, or soleley on the one thats ' benaeth' / layered the main drum sound? Ive tried using decay, but how much do you use ?

By jakob iller Sun May 09, 2004 9:56 am
pculiar... do u use the decay from the adsr in your mpc or from cool edit (does it actually have that?)? i only know about akai samplers. you would want to use your adsr on both your snares and kicks - the layered ones too. try this... take a bassy kick (an 808 whatever - wich we will call A) and another kick that has a nice pop to it but wich is not so beefy overall (B). layer them. for kick B... in ur adsr give it a short decay time... long sustain... and a half of the release. for kick A give it a bit of attack... long decay... long sustain... and no release. set the volume of B higher than A.
on the EQ B needs to have good highs while A needs to have the bass... you might as well kill all the highs on it. it's not exact science but in the process of doing so you should get the idea of what decay is etc.

having said that... if i were were you i would forget about cool edit and sample your stuff straight into the mpc.

hope this helps...

well, thanx!

Okay, I use my mpc for sampling the whole package, I use cool edit to record my drum-loops in (snare/ hihat/ kick/ bass/ sample)...

okay, your story is quit clear, but what is adsr...?

thanx again!

P-Culiar;
You should check that site I suggested for reading material. Right now, one question's answer will spawn another question. If you do the reading, you'll get more basic info and can get more useful answers.

Peace.
