I currently own an MPC 2000XL and am more than satisfied with it... However, I sometimes wonder if I'd have been better off with a 3000... I liek the idea of 12 Bit sampling and I just have my doubts sometimes... Can someone break down the differences for me... Maybe some Pros and Cons... I mean why did u guys choose the 3000... Did most of you buy it before the 2000XL was out and just kept it or did yous buy it because it has some advantages? Thanks in advance for any help clearing this up...

3000 is 16 bit, the 3000 is a better machine al around, but the 2000 has more features at the cost of a less intuitive and elegant OS and interface.

How is the OS better? Could you elaborate or give a specific example?

You just got to try it, it has a button for every function, shallow menus, well thought out.

On the 2000 akai was squeezing more features into less buttons so it opted for 6! soft keys, the shift number thing, and that open window bullisht.

There is nothing to compare. 3000 hands down.
I got a 2kxl and would give it up for a 3000 in a minute... if the price was right.

I've got a new Blue 2000XL myself and DO love it, but I admit to a growing fascination with the build and features of the 3000. It comes with the 8 outs, you can attach a monitor to it...things just made me say "hmmmm", ya know? I'll admit, it the situation presented itself where I could sell my 2000XL for a decent price and quickly get a like-NEW 3000, I'd have to take the offer.

I get ragged on for saying things like this, even though I have more than one MPC (unlike some).

After owning both MPC2000XL and MPC3000, things I wish the MPC3000 had:
1. Disk compatibility with newer Windows OS's.
2. Partititions >30 Meg (MPC2000XL can have up to 1 gig partitions)
3. Velocity -> pitch modulation
4. Shift feature - I actually prefer the SHIFT-number on the newer MPC's since you can access most every function in a single double button push as opposed to the two or three serial button push on the MPC3000. I consider the MPC3000 to have DEEPER menus than the MPC2k series. For example to get to the parameter to change which disk to load from takes 3 button pushes on the MPC3000 but only a single shift-load press on the XL.
5. Insert in step edit. What is entered in the step edit by default is buried, yet in a deeper menu, and generally a pain when you need to swith between what you need to enter. On the XL, when INSERT is pressed, it prompts you what to enter.
6. Digital out. Not possible on the MPC3000, available as an part of an option on the MPC2k series.
7. Midi clock on more than one output. The MPC2k series, even though has only two outs, can send midi clock on both. A plus for todays midi clock hungry gear.
8. Loop points. MPC2k series has them.
9. More effects. Available as an option on the MPC2k series.
10. Other format importing. MPC3000 only reads native format, MPC60 and S1000/S3000 formats. MPC2k series reads all those, Roland 7xx, Emu EIII, and S2000 formats.

I do still use the MPC3000. It usually drives an S2000 that provides some additional horsepower in the sampling department. I will likely never give it up, even if it is for the simple ability for me to use a monitor and not have to squint at an LCD (though for it's age, the MPC3000 LCD is pretty large).

Hmm... 3000 has deeper menus? maybe in some cases, but what gets me about the 2k is you have 6 soft buttons, more to wade through) plus all that cursoring to your open window point.

I think it helps to have all the buttons labeled in from of you, rather than remembering the six things under each page.

And how do yall feel about using only 1 program @ a time. Say u have multiple (3 or so, or more) programs.
1 containing drums
2 samples
3 more samples
4 different sounds

and u wanna use them all in 1 sequence.

and then on top of that, u wanna MIDI this all to other sound modules where it wont let u cut off the internal sounds w/o turning the local play to off and then u still hear hits and the drum/MIDI type is backwards.

.... i dont know mayb its just me and I only use the machines for controllin my Z4 now. But I love its feel and sound. very LOUD!

get back please with some input.

for those 3000 users.
