A lot of producers i've spoken to seem to want to pre EQ heavily making sure that the drums they get going into the sampler are the drums that they're gonna stick with on the MIX OUT tip. I'm more of an avid fan of mixing and EQing drums later on in the console. I also would add compression to individual drums as well later on. Lately it has been urking me that so many producers have some of the hardest most crispy EQ'd and engineered drums i've ever heard (especially at Beat Society which is a live demonstration of beat production) coming directly out of the MIX OUTS with no mixing or eqing done whatsoever. You think this is just the product of pre-sampled studio type drums handed down from studio user to studio user (like premo and pete sharing drums for instance after they were mixed and engineered to a t and recorded to say 2" tape) or you think that these kats just are that good at getting their shit to sound good in advance.....I personally was looking for a transition in my sound quality and thought I might try EQING even more but found it to be quite difficult as i'm sampling off vinyl and working with complete drum breaks not isolated drums (kick, snare, hat) ----- maybe i'll just sample everything into the S950 and chop them shits up and then resamlpe into the 60 after i've got them isolated and see what happens then......

Just looking for some opinions on this....no big deal really.

Thanks - peace.

EQ and compress as you sample them in, just do the whole loop till everything sounds tight, but it;s better to deal with each drum sound as far as EQing goes. I usually eq for the sample I'm taking on the way in, I also adjust levels for each sample since Hihats are usuallly softer than the rest.

yeah, EQ on the way into the sampler, sampling into the 950 and then to the 60 would sound very ill too, especially if you want to mess with the sampling rate, in the 950.

yeah i've been experimenting with sampling into the 950 first and then resampling into the 60....get the drums nice and cruddy at 12000 rate.

hehe, use your compressor before the sample input, that with EQ will get you crazy results.

Personally I allways eq every single sample before it gets to my sampler. I take a quick moment to adjust and then make my sample. Then I allways eq on the mixing board after I got a groove going just to give the kick a nice bottom and crisp up the highs a little bit. I been thinking about this topic too lately and I decided I need to just spend a while making myself a nice drum library to work from.

i always sample on the way in. or actually i run the sample through 1/4" tape first and eq it then.

nice input yall....yeah i appreciate it. I've been thinking about spending like a week just eqing and isolating drums into kits.....I am tired of pulling out the same records with the same breaks i've used over a dozen times.....i've got this complex that I can't reuse the same drums or else it'll taint my track.....sucks being a VIRGO. I gotta focus on like 40 of my favorite drum kits and just go to town one week.....then i'll just keep reusing the same drums and slowly build them up from there by introducing a new snare here or a new hat there......

I used to always use a compressor first but learned that it was sorta killing the mixdown phase cus the drums were pretty mashed.....i think i'll go much lighter on the compression and really only use it for controlling the peak transients during sampling.

I always notice that EQ on the way in seems to limit the frequencies I can work with afterwords. Unfotunately, I'm one of those producers that starts with drums so I want to be able to EQ when the music is added so that everything fits. Since most dudes start with music though, EQ drums to fit is probably pretty common.

I used to eq when sampling but now I do it after. I personally think it's better that way.

I gots to co-sign that, especially with eq'ing & filtering (McDsp is the sh!t) in the box, its nice and easy try and use different eqs/filters by monitoring thru the software after the song is done.

before recording/monitoring i mess with the eq a bit on my board (4-band!), but pretty much have my base kits set up, which are already pretty hard, specially thru the 3K.

before and after. if you have specific things that you prefer going into the box use those, i got an old mxr dual 15 band, it has its own character, put a little compression on.

in mixdown, see where you are as a whole track, you may recompress things, and eq to get certain things to sick out just where you need them.

I'm having some major conflicting problems when sampling into my 60. Because the 60 has an unbalanced input. I'm using a Y cable in the chain but this is how i'm set up right now

- going stereo out from my dj mixer
- to my 1531 graphic eq > (the Y cable I only sample the Right or Left Channel independently)
- from the EQ mono out to the dbx 166 compressor
- from the dbx 166 to the console
- into the Tascam 1516 console channel (mono) input
- and i'll use the 3 band eq with sweeps on the midrange band
- and then the console stereo output into the 60.
- i'll use a stereo rca out to quarter inch stereo....going into the 60.

I'll explain in full detail later....but any suggestions or ideas on the best way to connect your equipment to your 60 before sampling?

I'm trying to monitor what i'm doing while also being able to record into the 60......as you know!

Thanks guys-

Believe me - i have to reexplain this in full detail.....i'm at work so i'm really rushing on this.....I'm not a moron either.....i know about monitoring through the 60 and all I just want to apply more pre EQ and compression before sampling and am afraid i'm introducing stereo phasing. I'm trying to avoid all this but I donno......merging a stereo signal to mono isn't as easy as it sounds.

humm....I almost never sample anything in the 60 unless I have run out of sample time else where. I usually sample everything into the S950 and freak it there and on my console and use the 60 for sequencing and drums...
