Just wondering if there are any savy programmers out there developing a MPC 60 OS on a floppy? That would be most ill! I see the MPC3000 cats celebrating over there. Congrats fellas enjoy! If so duude lets get out there and support these guys. On floppy on a ROM, YO come on yall. Man, that would make some nice cash flow for someone. Im in college doing programming but I aint that good! Hahaha.... Anyone, Anyone?

Is there anything wrong with 3.10? What functionality would you reasonably want to add or change? Im just curious.

The MPC-60 is "program memory space challenged".

An update wouldn't be impossible.

From a bug fix point of view I am certain there are a couple of things that could be squashed. Elmacaco found a few memory handling issues a while back.

As for feature changes. A decision would have to be made about which of the current features would have to go in favour of new ones.

I'm sure you all know that the last time an MPC-60 update was released that you lost two features... The HELP MENU and SAMPLE DUMPING.

Just bare this in mind when making up wish lists for a project that may or may not become real one day.

Rohan.

"Just wondering if there are any savy programmers out there developing a MPC 60 OS on a floppy?"

There is one major hurdle in this. You could put a more advanced OS on a floppy, but the MPC60 would never load it. There is nothing about the MPC60 boot routine that tells it to look at the floppy for loading.

Besides, selling an updated OS is already the business of one company. I would not be sure that reverse engineering their work for the purpose of forward engineering would be legal. One could approach said company and offer to do it for them, but AFAIK there are only about 4 people in the world that are capable of programming that machine, none of which seem to be in the position to do so.

Well I just wondered there are tons of tech headz at school MODing everything from scientific calculators, iPods, PSPs, Xboxes, to their Vtech engines in thier cars. So I just thought SOMEONE could pull it off. I wish I was a more advanced programmer I surely would be all over the task. I dont know if it could be done but it would be cool as hell if it came to fruitation. Yo, I am sure if I am thinking about it there is someone out there whos already attempting it. Good luck to that kid wherever he or she is! [/i]

The MPC60 has floppy boot loader routines in a similar way an MPC3000 has them.

That is how it is able to launch utility disks that are hosted on the Roger Linn Design site.

Having said that, booting an OS from floppy on a MPC60 is one dumb idea for anything but "utility tasks". ( the TEST DISK, MIDI FILE FORMAT CONVERTOR, FILE RECOVERY TOOL as an example ).

This is a good point Mike has raised.
Although probably slowing a little in sales over time; the current MPC60 OS is still a current and viable product of Roger Linn Design.

I confirm that ! :-) ( + or - a couple unless you have included them already )

i'd like to know if anybody removed or figured out how to bypass the LSI filter chip inside the 60 to rid it of its anti-alias function.....is that even possible?

Its amazing when one comes up with an idea, some of you all are hatin' on him. Just an idea folks dont have a cow! You all are so quick to say "duude thats dumb! or why would you want to do that?" You sure arent a forward think bunch on here! Where would most of the inovators you all WORSHIP on here be if they were as pessimistic as you all are. Probably broke unknown, working a nine to five, and or straight up pushin' on your local street corner.
Yo I aint dissin' the folks who had some valueable responses just the ones sittin and hatin in the corner. :o

it's one thing to come up with an idea, another to come up with an idea that someone else needs to make happen.

Plus, another upgrade isn't a new idea, it's a rerun.

Sorry, you said hatin' : )

Sorry to say but you're not very forward thinking yourself if you're asking for an OS update for a 17 year old machine on a floppy disk (some would say you're in the dark ages of technology).

There are many pieces of recent production gear that allow you to update the system's flash rom by floppy (eg, MPC2000XL, Ensoniq ASRX-Pro). Maybe you should look into one of those newer machines if you're looking for that feature.

Many of us fall into this category in some way or another (I take it you do as well seeing as you're a student). I don't see why you went here because I didn't see anyone hating on your idea. I just saw responses that dealt with the praticality of your idea.

Aiight peeps! I said for those sitting in the corner. I meant those who would later, surely as they sky is blue in Kansas and the day is long in Alaska, some wanna be b-boy would make some smart alec comment about what I posted. I was giving the folks who had already responded PROPS for adding something of value to the discussion. So no harm homie if you got something too add other than the USUAL noise.

Yeah I am in school doing alot of programming and things. I thought there were some peeps out there that were thinking about a MOD OS or something of the sort. Now, if there is some issue you think should be known like memory issues or something like that, cool. Cos, I did not know that until the discussion started. Enlightenment, spread the word ya know. You can be cool with out the virtual frontin'.

"it's one thing to come up with an idea, another to come up with an idea that someone else needs to make happen. Plus, another upgrade isn't a new idea, it's a rerun."

Hey, heres an idea dont read my post. If you have already had this discussion, dont reply, move on to the next post, homie. I mean if its going to be like that, why not just have a forum where people who have been on here for certain time frame can discuss things, so others who been on here forever dont get ticked if you ask a darn question.

Like I said I wasnt wanting anyone to do it for ME. I said earlier that I do programming just not up to that speed yet. Let say someone is doing a MOD prog and they are stuck and need some ideas or help. It would be cool they ran upon this topic and got some info they needed. Okay noy lets say he/she decided to post and asked " would someone like to help out." Lets say we did. Everyone would benefit. Everyone, not just me. Just because you thought of it before doesnt make it a non-topic.
Question: Did ya do it? Did you try?, Well then homie... Why are you HATIN'. Just chill or go elsewhere. (yeah I said it)

It would be cool cos like all the tech headz I run into are like " Well they say you cant do that with blah blah, but we are gonna freak the hell out of it and prove them wrong" So Im sure its okay just to discuss what is possible and what isnt.

Excuse my rawness everyone.

By elmacaco Wed Jul 20, 2005 6:31 pm
Why spread the ebeef then? Tellin me to go elsewhere just creates more of what you don;t like. Just ignore me and talk to the people that are helping if you want them to stick around.

The first step would be to get the 3.10 OS code, since it's already been adapted for the 60, then maybe modifying that would be the best way. Although I believe the read pins on the eproms is blown out, so actually getting to the code may prove difficult.

The 3000 already had floppy versions out like 3.12 and 3.11 so I guess that was where Rohan started.

"I said for those sitting in the corner."

Like who?

"some wanna be b-boy would make some smart alec comment about what I posted. "

Again, for who is this directed?

"I was giving the folks who had already responded PROPS for adding someth"ing of value to the discussion."

Like who?

2wice for asking why?
Me for raising the legal issue?
Rohan for raising a major technical hurdle?
elmacaco for reminding us that this has already been discussed?
BassLINE for wondering why DEEPDOWNINSIDE would insult the very people that are the most qualified to make this happen?

Is that everyone?
