s900 to sample, 60II to sequence

My new 60 came in two days ago and I've already fallen in love. The sound is great, the sequencer is illlllll, etc. But, my first baby is still the 900 - I honestly like the sound of it better than the 60. So, I now want to hook the two up so I can sample into the 900, sequence with the 60, and record the eight outs of the 900 into the comp.

But here's the thing, I'm trying to wrap my mind around this MIDI thang between the two. I've read the manuals on the net, but I'm still not getting it. What midi cable connections should I make b/n the two ? How do I set it up inside both machines ? I can usually figure most things out w/o even using a manual but this is killing me. Anything to get me in the right direction would be most appreciated. Thanks yall. Pz


Edit : Just figured out another question to ask haha..I noticed on the 900 that on the back there's a 25pin connector that says rs-232c above it. Would this be the SCSI interface ?

900 is not scsi ready. look in the back of the 60. there should be a stereo input. you should find out what it's for...

Here's the deal now though - I have midi out of the 60 to the midi in of the s900. On the s900 the midi channel's set to 1, key is C3 60. I also have the sixty's midi channel set to one, I have DRUM NOTES as the midi drum data sent, and i have the BASS pad (pad4) playing note 60 C3, which is where the sample is in the 900, and where it's set to. But, when I press the BASS pad, nothing happens. The midi receive on the 900 doesn't blink. And like I've said, I've gone through both manuals and I've done what they said to do, but nothin's happenin. Any ideas ?

you have to set the track to 'midi' not drum.

One more thing I've run into - I have a different program for each sample on the 900, and a track set up on the 60 for each program. So say for instance I have a kick one one program in the 900 and that's being triggered by pad 1 on track 1 of the MPC, Snare on another program being triggered by pad 2 on track 2. To hear any sound, the program selected in the 900 has to be the one for that track. So for me to hear the kick, I HAVE to be on track one in the MPC, and I HAVE to have the kicks program selected in the s900. Obviously, this is really getting in the way of programming loops because I can only hear one specific sound at a time. Any more guidance would be appreciated..

Setup your samples in the one program, not a seperate program for each sample.

I just tried keeping them in one program, and I got essentially the same results. The sample had to be selected on the 900 for it to play, and if the corresponding track wasnt selected on the 60, you couldn't hear anything. This shit's got me mad confused..

sounds like you have 'solo' on. turn it off and, you should hear all tracks simultaneously

You need to setup seperate keygroups (keyspans) for each sample within a single s900 program, so that they all respond on a single MIDI channel, and so that you can play them all from a single MPC track.

You will still not be able to play them if you are on a different MPC track that is not assigned to the MIDI channel that you are using for that program on your s900.

It also depends on how much transposition you want for each sample within the s900, if you want to transpose each sample, then you are limited to how many samples you can fit in each program. You can have up to 32 keygroups per program.

Solo's off, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around these keygroups. Simon check your PMs good sir.
