Oh boy ......
I have just spent the entire evening on this one and thought I would ask the you all for some input.
After listening very carefully to sounds imported from my PC via MPCEditor I have discovered a MAJOR screw up with this process. Any imported sounds with ambient tails ( natural decay from accoustic snare ) suffer from serious artifacts (alliasing?) , are on average a few db quiter and slightly lower in pitch. Also after re-recording the mpc60's output it becomes really obvious the imported file is suffering from DC offset and noise. The same sound sampled into the mpc sounds fine. Any sound imported from floppy suffer BADLY enough for me to get rid of this mpc60. I'm not sure about the cause of this. Could the MPCEdit program OR the mpc60 v3.1 os screw up the change in sample rate or bit depth. Please someone help me confirm this .......

well Joel,

i also had an MPC60II with OS v3.10 and i noticed some strange clicks and artifacts at sample start and end points

before i had OS v2.12 and everything worked clean

i also heard if you install extra memory from 3th party manufacturers, that this could corrupt your samples and the MPC's functionality also

at this moment i have another MPC60II with OS v3.01 and the Marion SCSI board , and there is something strange happening also: when i'm sampling sounds and the memory is almost full, the sounds that i already sampled get digital crackling and become distorted. i have to save my samples in time or else they are ****!

so i don't know what it is with those modified 60's . i also have an MPC3000 and this works clean and neat, no problems at all, never

but i wanna keep my 60 because the fatness of the sound is unmatched and for me this is the best MPC ever

"i also had an MPC60II with OS v3.10 and i noticed some strange clicks and artifacts at sample start and end points " - same here. I found that the start + end points would click at random intervals

"the sounds that i already sampled get digital crackling and become distorted. " - same as well. Although I'm not too sure about how much memory I had used. The mpc60 simply wrote errors into each sample until all were corrupted.

I would still like to hear from other mpc60 / MPCEdit users .... ?

Hey ...

Got some really good insight on the akai samplers list

>>>>>> here it is ... start from bottom and read up <<<<<<<<<

"I wrote a bug report, wiped it from my hard drive and
requested a refund." Oooowwch ! That's harsh ;)

Mike ...I just tried exporting from MPCEdit with both
the convert to 12bit option on and off each to it's
own freshly formatted disk. Same result as before.

Peter ... thanks so much for responding with your
experience on this issue. I really apreciate your
feedback as I'm considering the pro's and con's of
using the mpc60 in my setup.

My version about 7 month ago, did not safe extentions, so the MPC could not load them, and after I renamed them the program was not able to recognise the renamed files, it made horrible 16 bit Lin to 12bit Log errors, that is what I call a nightmare. I wrote a bug report, wiped it from my hard drive and requested a refund.

I do not follow. So there are no problems with the MPCEditor using 16-bit formats? Aside from a 12-bit calc error, what are the other errors and mistakes?

I used that MPCEditor, for a while that program STINKS!!! , apart from calculation errors, it made all kinds of mistakes. The MPC60/3000 use 12 bit LOG PCM ADDA conversion for the 12 bit SMP files., so it is not entirely true that the 16 bit Liniar PCM is been shifted ,it is recalculated . I suspect the MPCEdit program to edit in true Liniar PCM. so when you dump your samples back you get the the problems you discribe. They sound nice on your PC but horrible in the MPC.

I am not sure if anyone knows what the MPC60 does with the last 4 bits
when you load a 16-bit MPC3000 file into it. Well, we know it drops them, but I not sure if it adjusts other bits based on the values dropped.

Note: Do NOT check the 12-bit box in the Editor when exporting from the Editor for the MPC60. Well, actually you can try checked and unchecked for testing and let us know.

i found out that the crackling in my samples was due to a bad power supply

i heard a technician talking about when the convertors and components don't get the exact voltage , they will not work properly

so now, the power supply is new, and my samples are normal again, without artifacts ... :D

i hope i didn't damage any components with feeding them a bad voltage

Why are you gonna use a hard core gangster ass machine like the 60 thats intuitive and easy to use (i can chop a sample up way quicker on the MPC) and use software to transfer samples, see that record in on the back of your 60, plug a 1/4th cable from that hole to the hole on your soundcard, click your mouse and press record on the 60. Stop being little pussys.

=)

hey DOVESKI,

i am sampling with the cable from the CD player or the mixer into my MPC

i think you overlooked that i said that the MPC60II is the best of them all for me

my unit just got somewhat wornout and started acting strange

now i found out that it was the power supply

Hello mr . doveski
I agree with your "jam it in there" no B.S. approach to making music but why jump onto a technical issue like this when you have nothing to add but a picture of some lady's bum?
I am focusing more on the engineer / audio tech side of setting up my studio. Listening for and learning more about details like "artifatcs" "aliasing" and "truncation" so I can explain to clients like you what makes thier samples sound like crap. ......Yes it's that "12bit nightmare" sound Mr.doveski... that will be 2500.00 please.... thanks....your demo sounds great......he.he.he.he

If you care about technical issues and I would think the English clealiness of your music buy a MPC4000 and sample through the Digital In. Why do you even have a 60, what a waste.

The nightmare has overwhelmed me..... ( and according to dovski I don't deserve it anyway) so I'm selling my mpc60 through my local music shop. I'm going to get a 1000 wich should make both me and dork-ski happy. Sorry I tried to join your mpc60 fan club.

Good-bye

Well, the problem isn't the editor, these posts may be from people not using the latest version.

I was one of Mike's test dummies with the 3.10 OS 60 and floppies before I got the SCSI, and it works great.

I think he made an update to the software based on our conversations, and it just rocks.

I stopped exporting in 12 bit format, so it works just like importing a 3000 file, no reason other than I thought it was dumb of me to do it twice.

If your power supply was faulty, other parts of this mpc may have been damaged, so this is hardly a good test of the 60. More of a test of your luck.

MPC Editor is wack program, I use AWave studio with my
MPC 60 with OS3, and have no problems.

AKAI MPC 60 is dope for strictly Hip Hop music.
Specially for short chopped sounds, (Gangstarr)
that can be later extended with good reverb
"Ambient tails" (Mobb Deep). 8)

If your sounds are slightly lower in pitch, that's because
MPC works at 40000 KHz, and your sound from PC is at 44100 KHz.
Go to sound compression option and you will notice that your
sample is +17 in the pitch.
Just set it to 0.

I have noticed little crack(s) at the end of the sound some times.
I tap the BD, and every 3rd time I tap it quick - crack.
:? What I did was, I took it to PC and made a strong fade out on the
silenced part of sound witch was the “ending flat line”. :D

If your "clean" BD got hum or noise, use them strictly in 12-bit mode,
If still bad try MPC compression.
if you import from PC try reasampling problematic sounds at 40000 KHz
in 12 and 16-bit mode.
Put them side-by-side and compare them. Open your mind and experiment... 8)

Also when saving samples on floppy from PC use small letters and very short names. That will fix some mistakes.

i experienced with my MPC60 & MPC-editor that stereo samples must be 16-bit - otherwise MPC60 fuks up them. the loading is just much slower...
