Just got my first MPC! (60II) any tips to getting started??

I actually havent got it yet, its being shipped as we speak.

Ive been DJing and producing for 11 years. Ive always been a fan of hardware. I have lots of keyboards, guitars, basses, percussion, etc.

When It comes to sample based shit, I sample with WaveLab, ive been doing all of my beats (using single drum hits) in Fruity Loops, and all of my loops and breaks in Acid. These programs are stupidly easy to use and editing is a breeze on my 20" LCD monitor. So im a little afraid to switch to the MPC, but I know as far as the sound and vibe Im looking for its the way to go.

With the MPCs short sampling time, I plan on using it to replace Fruity Loops, for doing all of my beats. I'll still use Acid for all of my breaks and longer samples, until i can afford hardware to replace it (possibly an ASR-10).

So do you guys have any tips to help get me started??

oh, and I have a stupid question to ask. From what I understand, the MPC 60II samples in mono, right? So how would I go from vinyl to MPC? do I only connect either the right or left output from my Vestax mixer?

Depends on what O.S. your running?

no os upgrade, just the stock version 2.1whatever.

Is the 3.10 OS upgade an absolute must??

Yeah you def. need to get 3.10 cause right now when you sample something and assign to a pad and then go to sample something else whatever you sampled before will disappear from the pads it sucks.

what are you saying exactly? im not sure ive experienced this same thing with my os 2.12. If i sample something to a pad and go to same something else you have to switch pad to the next pad or whatever pad you want to sample to. You mean with os 3.10 you can sample to a pad with a sound assigned to it and the mpc60 will keep the old sound in memory?



I have a 60II with os 2.12 and i have been able to work around some of the limitations but the 3.10 os is a tremendous upgrade. I will be buying one in about 4 weeks, and I cant wait.

The cut and paste functionality, the ability to cut pads off with another pad, no 5.0 sec per pad sampling limit, the poly/mono/note off function, and also cant forget about the no need to save sequences before sampling a new pad!

clean the pads. when i had a 60 my pads where old and dirty. search using my username, and search within the mpc 60 forum and i had a thread where i show u how to open up the 60 and get the pad sensor off etc.

what?!..that never happens to me!!for real..i ain't even bothered w/ getting the upgrade..i know it ads this and that..and blah blah...but damn..if Diamond D, LOrd finesse and all them pioneers can get some sick ass shit outta the old O.S..so can i!..honestly..i have had no problems so far..i ain;t on par with them legends..but working with the old O.S aint' THAT BAD!

well i decided to get the OS upgrade, i only paid $375 for the MPC, which i think is pretty low, its in great condition and has the memory upgrade, so spending the extra $$ for the upgrade aint that big a deal. I dont have the $$ for the scsi option yet, but Im sure I can get by without that for now.

you just need a RCA stereo to 1/4" mono adapter cable to go from the line out from your mixer to the 'sample in' or maybe it's 'record in' on the mp, can't remember off hand.

damn where'd you get it from for that cheap??

I got it on ebay, the guy is a pretty reputable seller. he was moving out a lot of gear. I wanted to grab his S950 too, but didnt have the $$ cuz Ive been buying too much other crap lately.

UPS says it should be here tomorrow, and my OS upgrade should be comming next week from RogerLinn.

UPS just dropped it off! Im at work, cant wait to get home now. It looks great, kept in perfect shape. everything is intact, all buttons and sliders feel sturdy and move smoothly.

Ok, so I got home and plugged it in, everything works great except for the screen.

The backlight is not working. I can read everything on the screen clearly when the lights in my studio are on, but when I turn them off I cant see a thing on my MPC.

Im assuming it needs to be replaced, unless (sorry if this is a stupid question), is there an on/off switch for the backlight or a brightness control??

If I do need to replace the backlight, how hard of a process is it?

It's not that hard you jsut have to take out the Foil in between the glass and the back of the screen.

So theres no control for the backlight? if its not on it just means its broken?
