I'd go with something like thats word.
You're better off getting an external scsi zip or even get a scsi HD which you can attach at the same time. That way you're save from zip COD(almost), can backup important stuff on the HD and transfer tracks to zip if you plan on going to the studio or taking the MP somewhere else.

If I'd get a new 3k a non-working stop button would freak me the f*ck out!
So I feel ya on getting it fixed. Perhaps you're better off with bringing it to someone in town who has some reputation on old Akai gear than paying all that cash for Forat/VST

If all you use are Zips I would get the internal zip installed. I have one installed on mine and its been going strong for about 6 months now with heavy use. If you get the zip installed make sure you keep the port on the back active so in case there is a problem you can hook up an external zip to get you by. I repair MPCs so I keep a spare internal zip and replacing it would only take a few minutes. If you are comfortable with going under the hood of your MPC just keep a spare internal zip handy.

There are 10 screws that need to be removed. 6 are on the bottom and 4 are on the back. The 6 on the bottom are the screws closest to the edges (3 on each side). The 4 on back are the 4 closest to the top of the MPC. Once you remove these carefully lift the cover from the front (almost like there is a hinge on the back. I say carefully because there are cables connecting the top and bottom PCBs. Once you get the front up a little you can take a peek and see where the cables are.

I think it can only access 780MB or something like that. Probably a laptop drive would be the best since they require less power and are made to fit in small spaces. www.mpc3000.com has some info on this stuff.
