Theoretically true, but it's very unlikely that you'll damage your equipment just because of the Y cable.
Y cable is for spreading mono signal to stereo input, not other way around.
You have to have the stereo signal (2 channel) mixed to mono (1 channel.) If you are using 2 channel DJ mixer, then you can connect the phono out L to DJ mixer's program 1's L, then connect the phono out R to DJ mixer's program 2's L, set the cross-fader to center.
Now you hear only left channel from the DJ mixer, but the L channel is properly mixed. Just feed the L channel to the mono sampler.
This is a good setting, because you can change the amount of left and right mix.
Other no-mess solution is to make stereo to mono cable. I did made one for myself. To be honest, I cannot tell difference (other than sound level) compared to using Y cable, LOL! But this the proper way to do it;
