its attitudes in this thread that make me believe that alot of yall cats are some hiphop nerds from the burbs.

PR's recent hotness:
Queen
tracks on the ed OG LP

Calling pete a sell out cause of the gear he uses....GET REAL!!!

Would u call rakim a sellout if he was doing ads for Shure sporting a beta 58...

anyone with half an ear knows the 57 and 58 sound way better than any of that new beta crap.....but WHO FUKIN CARES!!!!!!!

another side note.....many of you all might be ignorant to this fact but most of these cats you hold near and dear go to this place called a recording studio to track songs, this means they are using outboard gear.

and in the 90s 2" 24 track was still prevelent, now its almost all profools

This has much more of an impact on the final product than any 12 bit.

I could get more into how bit rate affects sound quality (on an engineering note) but at this point most of you aren't worthy

Aw, the SP-303 and 505 are capable of great grime, the proprietry audio format that roland uses to get the realtime timestretch and pitchshift is pretty grimey to begin with, or definitly unclean, and the lo fi effect and the other effects on their bug out all sorts of grimey. I think those pieces are better designed than the fantom n shyt.

The remix is pretty dope. Defintely Lo Fi. The overcompression just adds distortion. not quite what everybody means when they talk grime.

and if they ever upgrade the 505 (the 606 is not an upgrade) then i hope they leave timestretch the way it is. i love the sound of it, it just oozes cheapness  as for the overcompression, i think it does a little more then just add distortion. there are alot of subtleties that come with it, hi hats cutting in and out, snares and mids get some nice ambience, subtle volume shifts, i love it. the compressor effect on the 505 is pretty nice , i just wish they added all the individual settings to tweak

damn yall cats is stereotypical!!!!!!!!!

Believe it or not there are ppl from the city even the inner city that dont live in the projects and have a computer and a internet connection......

and hiphop is not for the burbs (dont get me wrong I'll gladly take your $$$)

its an urban artform.....I'm not saying others aren't welcome, just that your not welcome to cast judgement....just gimme the loot and shut your fuking mouth. (kinda similair to these suburbanites coming to the west side to cop rocks and blows)

but i guess thats why there are so many kanye haters lurking around here and those who care more about what gear your using than what your stuff sounds like...

back in the day cats were trying to figure out what records other cats were sampling, true heads could give a fuk about what gear you use!!!!!

elmaaco, do you think the 12 bit mode on the 4000 sounds anything close to the 60 or s950, or is it like those bit-crushing software plugins?

This topic was stupid from the jump and just got worse and worse... From the 12bit vs 16bit to the urban vs suburban, this is just gossip and bs. There is nothing wrong with Pete getting paid off the Akai ad. The MPC (any model) is arguably one of the greatest tools for hip hop production ever produced. He is not sacrificing any artistic integrity by appearing in that ad. Just because it is of your opinion that he dosent make good music any more doesnt mean its because of his equipment or that it is EVERYONES opinion. I bought SS2 and theres a few tracks in there I thought were outstanding but thats my opinion. Jaem's Rakim analogy was definatly on point, its the exact same thing.

Some cats are like the omish of the hip hop community, they afraid of the new technology, and they afraid of whos doin what and where, and they talk about how things were in the "good old days". Boogie Man was right when he said you cats need to get out and live it to see that hip hop is going on. And its everywhere too... All across the globe... And Hip Hop for everyone, no one is to be excluded... Urban or Suburban, NY to LA, Austrailia to Germany, and out to Japan and back again. Its all about creativity, artistry, the love of dance, music, and having a good time with each other for our short lived stay on planet Earth. Peace.

^Take your own advice. You got your opinion, everyone else has got theres. You contradict yourself becuase you say what you said, but then you go on to kinda validfy your opinion as the RIGHT WAY to see shit, verses someone elses WRONG way of seeing shit.

We're out there rocking shows, open mics, observing Hip-Hop. My major focus point throughout this thread has been my distaste for where Hip-Hop is at right now. Not just Pete Rock. Just cause someone is a legend doesn't mean they are excluded from getting criticized.

It's funny because ya'll seem to respect where Hip-Hop is at right now, right? Cause' that is basically what all these this era verse that era, this gear verse that gear debates boil down to, so lets get to the point. If you think Hip-Hop is so pure right now, and in such a good place, then why is it the cats that opened the door for all of us to be here, got to beat the **** door down (the door they created) to evern get heard, or get a shout out? 99% of you mother **** are lying, your not here for love, music, or culture... Your here because you peeped some fine pussy laying on the spread faded off roofies, and thought you'd hit it to.

By 2wice Thu May 19, 2005 11:18 pm
My point is that its not about eras or gear, its about and having fun. You cant tell nobody what gear to use and you cant tell nobody therye excluded from doin this because of where therye residence is located. I dont care whos official, or whos real, or whos selling out, whos pure, or who respects hip hop or who doesnt, its not that serious. I care about making music and having fun in life. If you have a distaste in todays hip hop thats ok but dont tell people whats going on out here aint legit. Its all subjective and really all that matters is people having fun. Thats whats pure.

^I can respect your point of view. But music is very serious to me. I can't speak for everyone else, but thats how I feel. Especially in a day and age where little kids are being influenced by the so-called fun vibes of dirtbag cats like 50 Cent. My next door neighbors 9 yr. old daughter was walking around in tiny little shorts the other day, with mad lip gloss on, singing "Lollipop". Now of course it's more innocent in that, she don't understand what shes saying.. But the seed has been implanted curtoeusy the music. People are greatly influenced by music both consciencely and subconsciencely.

How this all ties into the greater thing we we're initally talking about is... Cats are getting lazier and lazier, and the music is getting less and less respectable (IMO). Like I said before.. I think we live in an age where the general music listener has come to accept medoicracy and not even think twice about it.

Your right though, my view is not the end all views view. It's just one mans vision.

When you say music is getting less and less respectable I have to agree 100%. Isnt it strange to go to a club and people are dancing to murder??? Bizarre, it almost seems like theres an agenda in the main stream music industry. Lo Pass I dont disagree with anything you said. Our opinions go hand in hand. Yours first in a nutshell, "Main stream Hip Hop is wack, and if you dont know about the great artists of the past then respect the artform, listen and learn." Now mine, "once youve done that then you need to realize that music should be made for fun and not with the intention of getting rich to aquire material items." And Im sure there are people who dont agree with any of that. People who think, "All you need to do is study popular music and imitate to get rich." That my friend is a sellout.
