MPC-60 and RackMount Sampler?

I just picked up a MPC 60.I am really impressed with it so far with the exception of a few minor things that will be taking care of with the O.S. upgrade.My question pertains to using the MPC-60 along with a rack mount sampler like the Akai S2000 or higher.I am aware of the capabilities of the S2000 but I am wondering about the musical possibilties.I plan to use the MPC 60 for single shot drum sounds and sequencing only.I would like to use the S2000 for intrument samples,vocal samples,looping of 2 to 4 bars of beats and or melodies etc...I am wondering if the MPC 60 will be adequate enough to trigger and sequence the S2000? I like the fact that with a rack mount sampler you can spread out a sample over the keys of a keyboard,pitch up down,time stretch or whatever.If any of you guys have a setup that is similar to this please give me some insight.Also if you know of any popular music that I would be able to find that was done with this setup(MPC 60 and External Sampler)or if you yourself have music on the web that was done with this combination please let me know so that I can check it out.Thanx in advance.

Honestly I haven't used mine with a hardware sampler yet. However, it won't give you any problem, that setup you mentioned will surely work great. I've tested mine with a Motif-Rack, an MKS-50 and a few other synths and it's really awesome as a sequencer as well. Depending on what type of music you'll be creating I'd say the capabilities are there, no problem.

I make hip-hop point blank and period.I won't say that I make "commercial" hip-hop or "underground" hip-hop because to me personally the only diffrence is the subject matter of the songs not the actual beat or melody itself.I have been a fan of this music since the 80's be it Run-DMC,LL or Too Short,Eazy ,E-40,Jay-Z,Nas,Biggie,Tupac or who ever.Producer wise I really like Ant Banks,DJ Quick,Dr. Dre and Warren G when it comes to like synthy,808 and keyboard type beats.On the sampling tip I really like Just Blaze,Kanye West,Premeire,Easy Mo B,Pete Rock,The Heatmakers etc...I really like synth type beats because they each have there own sound to them but I would really like to start being able to creatively sample existing sound from wherever be it records,cd's,movies.I really like Just Blaze and Kanye West for their use of vocal samples underneath of their own compositions it gives the music that soulful feeling that I really enjoy.I AM NOT A NEWBIE.I have been doing this for years using other various MPC's including the 2000xl,3000 and 4000.My questions come in regards to using an actual dedicated hardware sampler with the MPC 60.I have used sound modules with MPC's so I am aware of the possibilties there but I have not used a dedicated hardware sampler in conjuntion with any MPC.I would hopefully like to come up with some head-nod inducing concoction of West Coast G funk type music mixed with that soulful sound that is so prevelant in alot of New York hip-hop using my MPC 60,several sound modules/synths and a S2000(or higher) sampler.

All og Premeir's beats are done pn the 60 w/ an s950, it is used bt lots of people. It certainly is adequate.

I'd get a keyboard as well, for the key sounds, but it is no required.

I'm using MPC60 to sequence everything in studio: Yamaha A5000 Sampler, MKS50, RY30, Korg DS8, Fat Freebase, Softsynths, And it absolutely rocks! All midi information is sent whereever it needs to be (ie controllers, sysex etc) and the timng on all machines is perfect, except the odd glitch when I accidently send sysex to the wrong machine!

So MPC 60 plus sampler is the way to go - just make sure that it's got a few more bells and whistles than the 60 (ie Filters and sound design) (Can't recommend the Yam a5000 cos of it's wierd knobs!) I would recommend Akai s5000...

with the Mpc 60 for just about every track i do. the S2000 complements the 60 very nice. the 60 can be used to trigger the sounds, so if you wanted a particularly clean drum kit (16 bit sound), you could sample into the S2000 and just trigger from the 60 to give it that punch.

I use my 60 as my main sequencer like Arctec, it controls about 10 other sound sources. I love it. I copped an s6000 with a bunch of the options because they are going pretty cheap now. I saw an S5000 go on ebay for $308, then pople caught on and they tend to go for $450 or so, but they can be had cheap. I'd recommend one of those, excellent combo.

Arctec, I usually block sysex and channel pressure because I had about 60 sequences and didn't realize I was recording channel pressure for everything when most of my synths don't need it and my sequencer started slowing down randomly. Do you enable sysex when you need it or leave it on at all times?

Elmacaco - at the moment I would be using whatever the default setting is. I've only had the 60 for 2weeks, so haven't fine tuned yet. I will be getting my self into the manual on this one - it makes more sense to turn it on only when needed! Thanks for the tip!

yours is upgraded? Do you have the scsi too?

The OS is 3:10 in my 60.

Have tried to find out if I have scsi, but I believe that I don't (bummer) cos when I go to disk (think it's disk - 8 ) I only got 2 options, both relating to floppies - no mention of scsi or zip.

Have not opened it up or tried connecting a zip, but do you think it is worthwhile just to double check. Man if it did i'd be in heaven!

Probably means you don't have it. Don't hook up a zip to it, it might do damage to either unit. Definately get scsi if you sample at all in the 60 (I don't know why anyone wouldn't!)

Go to the midi filter screen and filter out aftertouch and sysex when you are not using them. Enable them on the tracks you need them on, record, then filter it out for the other tracks. I had 60 tracks with aftertouch recorded for all external midi parts done with my controler, when most of my stuff doesn't have aftertouch. I usually don't have that many sequences, but still, it can hurt.

Congrats on having the upgrade!! I think I'd rather have a 3000 than a 2.xx OS 60, but I'd rather have a 3.10 60 than a 3000!!
