Sound of the 3k

I love the sound of the 3k. It's the best sounding machine for record based production I m o.

Do any of you have problems with the noisefloor building up when you multitrack your sessions?

I can hear a very slight mechanical whine.

Maybe it's just this old box.

Mine has a machine wine, but thats outside the audio. Its actually the machine power supply. If your having wine issues within the audio, its either 1) ground problem from your sample source 2) your scsi or floppy is active when you are tracking or sampling (this could add noise) 3) ground loop at another point, say the computer or audio interface.

To test, go to the sample menu, put the record level to where it would normally be, unplug everything from the audio in, turn threshold down to 0 and record a sample say 5 seconds long. play the sample back and if you hear noise, its the machine. The sound sample should be dead silent. From there you can start tracing the problem.

And yes, I love the way it sounds on drum samples.

Whining is often caused by the inverter for the Display. I got a Roland S10 that whine too and if I disconnect the Plug from the displays backlight the whine is gone. Same thing with the Roland W30 I had. I sold it cause the thing was getting on my nerves. I wish I still have this thing cause it was cool (but the whining...)

Roland W30 is dope with the 12 bit sampling very underrated sampler/keyboard.

it's the inverter, trying to turn off backlight by pressing the display contrast knob

2) your scsi or floppy is active when you are tracking or sampling

and my backlight is lit when im sampling too.

I think these are my main issues. Im going to make sure that the scsi is off, and so is the backlight.


one other question.


compared to my xl, the buttons (not pads) are much harder to trigger. obviously some are worse than other due to use and abuse, but have you all noticed the 3k is harder to press?


i am already planning on replacing my under buttons that are annoyingly tough to press, but i didnt know what was an acceptable level.
